matsutake?

#29683271 - 10/01/26 03:38 PM (13 days, 21 hours ago)

4000' elevation, southern oregon conifer forest. growing from the forest floor, near Yew, Firs, Pines, and Doug Firs.

I'm not really sure how to ID matsutakes yet, but this one seems somewhat similar. it smells a little funky, but not like cinnamon.

can I get some pointers as to why this would be determined to be, or not be a matsutake for future finds

For starters it needs to have a ring on the stipe.

Without a ring or latex, this points straight to the compact Russula species—specifically subgenus Compactae / section Brevipedes (such as Russula delica or Russula brevipes).
