Green Russula and Two Boletes
    #23560001 - 08/20/16 01:38 PM (7 years, 5 months ago)

I found these today after a good rain last night. Any idea if they are edible? I don't want to eat something potentially toxic. Both of these pass the tests I know of for toxicity (the Russula has a green cap and doesn't taste acrid. The Boletes don't bruise, aren't bitter and don't have red or orange pores).

Green Russula
Green Russula 2

Scent: no detectable scent
Taste: similar to common table mushrooms, not peppery
Gills: white, break easily
Cap: Pale green, 2.5 inches across
Height: 2 inches
Stem: Less than 0.5 inches wide, white, vertical striations
Found: growing in moist dirt on a playground
Possible Identities: Russula virescens, Russula aeruginea

Damp Boletes
Damp Boletes 2

Scent: typical mushroom scent
Taste: very bland, like egg whites
Pores: yellow-brown
Bruising: none, stays white
Cap: Cracked, beige-brown, slippery (maybe wet from rain?), almost 3 inches across on large one, easily falls apart
Stem: white, no visible netting, less than 0.5 inches thick
Found: growing in moist dirt on playground

The boletes were soggy. I threw one out and tried cooking the other in the microwave to help it dry out. Bad idea. It turned into mush so I threw that out too.

Today, I ate a small piece of the Russula stem (after being sauteed). No adverse effects after three hours. I'll eat more of it tomorrow. I'm hoping for the best. Would be nice to add another kind of mushroom to my list of edibles.

I found two more Russulas today.

One looked to possibly be the same species as the first green Russula I posted. It was also found in the same area. My best guess is Russula virescens. Anyone want to confirm?

Cap Diameter: 95 millimeters, green skin peels almost to the center.
Overall Height: 50 millimeters
Stem: 15 millimeters wide, brittle and easily broken
Bruising: Did not change color when broken.
Scent: Pretty typical mushroomy scent
Taste: Mild
Gills: White, easily broken by bending, decurrent?
Habitat: Growing on dirt near the same location as the first green Russula. There was also a smaller one several yards away but I did not pick it.
Location: Near Columbia, South Carolina

I saw another, white one on the way to where I found the green one. My best guess for this one is Russula brevipes or Russula delica. Any thoughts on that identification?

Size: Like a dummy, I forgot to measure it and it is now chopped up. However, it was very similar in size to the green Russula in the photos just above these. Maybe a bit taller. The cap is depressed in the center and has some dirt on it. Stem was brittle and easily broken.
Bruising: There was no color change when broken. There was also no latex or other fluid when broken.
Scent: Scent was similar to flavor, a faint hint of pepperiness.
Taste: Very slightly peppery/bitter
Gills: White, densely-crowded, easily broken by bending, decurrent?
Spore Print: White
Habitat: Growing beside a road on what was either grass or dirt (I can't remember specifically. Maybe have been some of both). It was the only one present that I saw.
Location: Near Columbia, South Carolina

Well, that didn't go well at all...

I sauteed both of the mushrooms on Friday. I ate a small piece of the R. brevipes with no ill effects at all. My brother ate a piece of the R. virescens with no ill effects at all. Because of these positive results, I ate the remainder of both mushrooms yesterday at about 4:20 PM. That was a mistake. By 7:30 I started feeling nauseated and over the next several hours ended up puking my brains out. It was truly awful, but I feel better today. I strongly suspect that the R. brevipes is at fault due to reading a similar experience with one of our fellow members with that species (and also because I ate a specimen of the green Russula last week with no problems at all). This makes me want to give up the hobby altogether.

You should always be 127% sure of your ID. I would have waited for species confirmation before eating. I'm not positive the second shot is R. Brevipes. In my opinion they are not worth harvesting unless they've been taken over and turned into lobster mushrooms.

Foraging for mushrooms is not to be taken lightly. If you're going to continue you need to be careful and patient. You may also want to stick to species that have no toxic look alikes

It's good you're feeling better now. Maybe you could look at it as a "cheap" lesson for caution?

Perhaps so. I'll definitely be more careful if I do decide to continue.

glad your lesson wasn't too too serious, but don't give up.  you'll have good edible season coming up soon (cooler fall weather) and not have to take chances on a Russula.  if you're keen to forage soon, perhaps look into the higher ground west of Greenville where the season will naturally be just a little farther along.

i've never had the desire to eat a Russula sp yet but that green one, or a very similar sp, grows in my yard all summer long.  i think i'll keep it on the skip list.
