2 - The jury is still out on if there is any advantage to reducing the tea all the way down to crystals for making gummies. I like it for increased density and storage, but by weight I am getting approximately the same potency for crystals as the original powdered materials, just a smaller volume in most tests.

Now this I completely missed out on and it only occurred to me to check the forum again today after having tried out my own dehydrated tea (0.4g) I prepped over a week ago now.

Saying you get the same potency by weight for dried tea as you would from the initial fruits, this would mean a significant loss of actives, no? If you started with an ounce of fruit and condensed it down to something like 10 grams that'd account for a loss of around 18g worth of goodies assuming the dose of 1g of tea crystals is the same as 1g of what you started with.

From my own process I did a triple steep decoction of 28g of fruits and after reducing and dehydrating I was left with exactly 10.20g of these extract crystals I powdered, from there I assumed the dosage typical of 1g of dry fruit would be 0.36g of the dehydrated tea as thats what I get dividing 10.20 by 28 but after trying it myself I really didnt feel anything at all, leading me to assume theres significant potency loss somewhere along the line or I had just used some bunk shrooms, they were months old and I never tried em alone but they were dried and sealed properly so idk.

Am I understanding it correctly that the dosage of dehydrated tea is 1:1 by weight with the dosage of the fruits that were originally used? Because If that is the case that would mean that your losing more than half of the actives contained in the fruits as youre sure to have much less dehydrated tea as you would fruits in the end of the process. Please do tell me im doing something wrong with my math lol because this did at first sound like an excellent way to compress multiple ounces into a little tiny tupperware but now after trying the end result and reading what I missed above, im not so sure.

Maybe worth noting, after the extractions, I did reduce the tea to only a small volume with a rolling boil for around an hour to speed up the dehydrating, though idk if that has anything to do with not being able to feel anything from 0.4g of dried tea, I also have a naturally high tolerance and shrooms do what shrooms do so maybe it was just a fluke?

I am not getting that at all.

What I was finding was that if I took 10 grams of properly dehydrated shrooms with a tested potency of 10mg/g actives and make a dehydrated tea, the crystals end up weighing about 10 grams and still have a potency of about 10mg/g but 10 grams of crystals would take up a smaller volume than the dried mush.

So no noticeable loss of potency, but the reduced volume means that you can pack more potency into a single capsule if that is your method. And it stores really well if kept dry.

A long hard boil may have been the problem with your test. There are too many variables that I do not know about your process to know for sure.

Im probably doing something wrong then and maybe ill avoid the hard boil next time. Ah well, learned something from it at least lol.

Though im still confused on the weights though. If you started with 10g grams dry and removed all of the dregs, the end tea crystals should weigh less, no? I mean youre literally removing mass from the end product when you discard all the gunk in the end.

Hes talking about potency per gram

Dried fruit is less potent per gram than concentrated crystal is

I understand that part, I just cant wrap my head around how 10g starting material turns into 10g finished product when part of the process is removing the solids.

I guess we are taking all the meat off the bones with the extraction I just didnt know mushroom bones had comparable density to aerogel

10g of dried fruit does not turn into 10g of crystals

Hes just comparing potency per capsule

Like if you were to take 10g of dried fruits and turn it into capsules it would be less potent than 10g of crystals put into capsules

I think there's something wrong with his numbers. You don't get 10g's of "crystals" (it's mostly sugars, carbs) from 10g's of dried shrooms. Without some extra filtration you get app 40 - 50% of the initial weight but retain the potency of the dried mush, which in the end (presuming 50% reduction in weight) would be 20mg/g, ie. no potency loss ...

Hi all, I haven't been online as much as usual lately but here is what I know.

I first reported this ridiculous discovery here. I cannot explain it yet but in two tests I got the same result. The first time I assumed that I had made a mistake. The second, I was looking specifically for confirmation or denial, so I took care to watch each measurement. As a result I have some confidence in the findings but am open to skepticism and review and understand the doubt. I am as fallible as anyone else.

I can make some guesses, but that is all that they are. It may be any one of these or a combination of them and other things I have not thought of.
  • My filtration was not robust enough, so more materials end up in the tea crystals than desired. I have a new method of filtration that I will be testing that I hope improves this issue.
  • The extraction removes all but the fibrous cellular material which is very light when dried, though very absorbent so it seems much heavier when wet. This may be a small part of it, but I have dehydrated the dregs and they do have more weight than can be accounted for when added to the weight of the tea crystals.
  • The tea crystals bind with the water in some way that retains the weight. This seem more far fetched but may actually be the culprit. Think of concrete, a 60lb bag of dry concrete versus the 67.5lb after it sets. That is a difference of 12.5% additional weight from the water locked in the crystalized structure of the solid set and "dry" concrete.

All just sloppy guess work. I will continue to test and report results whether they seem to make sense or not.

So if Im understanding this correctly, no weight was reduced in the process, yet the volume shrunk, leading to more potency per volume

Yeah, exactly that.

I am mostly doing my extractions from fresh right now, so I have not tested that again, but I do have a fair amount of dried gt that I have been using for dehydration temperature testing experiments. So I will be able to do another round of testing the weights from dried mush to dried extracted tea soon. I will try to document and share every step and results. I will be testing my new filtration method as well, so I am looking forward to it.

Just need to get some of my real life stuff managed. Doing a rehab/renovation mostly myself. My wife's HG channel shows don't quite capture how much time and effort goes into house flipping. lol

Maybe we could crowd source to send off a sample or two of the starting material and final crystals for hplc, rule out possible quirk in the miraculix test

Rev did you ever get around to posting the results of the potency tests of dried materials in heated versus unheated conditions? I couldn't find it.

It would be nice to see a similar test of fruit body potency in heated versus unheated dehydrator, and at varying temps.

I just got annoyed seeing that excerpt someone posted here from a study saying that dehydrating at 60C (140F) resulted in 80% loss of actives. We can just assume that study is bunk but when I try to find tangible data to refute it there isn't much out there. While massive regulated grows with HPLC equipment that can easily solve this don't even bother, the responsibility to make any progress falls entirely on the small home cultivars.

Anyways, I digress, I guess I may have to eventually do my own testing.

I started a new thread just for testing results of different drying methods. I will keep updating that OP and thread with additional test results as I find time to complete more tests.

Naw, I just disconnected the heating element in a dehydrator to test the difference between dehydrating at room temperature versus other temperature settings in otherwise identical conditions. It is all in the thread linked above. The idea being that many people believe that heated drying destroys actives.

My results showed a small reductions in actives remaining in mushrooms dried at the highest settings on the dehydrator. That supports the claim that lower temperatures protect actives to a small degree. However, I have more tests to do to determine if the amount of loss ends with full dehydration and that low temperature dehydration has additional risk due to insufficient water removal. Those results are forthcoming.
