The albatrellus had some bluegreen bruising near the lower pores when i got back to camp, maybe ill remember to get a pic tn if itll help narrow it down. Id like to try em if they arent one of the toxic look alikes

Only two Albatrellus species have been reported from Idaho on iNaturalist: A. ovinus and A. avellaneus. I think it's not A.avellaneus, though, but you'll find a lot of yellow ones identified as such. A.ovinus dominates inaturalist by number of observations.
However, judging by what is presented in the pictures, I would add the possibility of this collection being Albatrellus citrinus; however, I don't know whether it occurs there or not, and according to literature it is usually solitary or loosely clustered, so take that with a grain of salt. And there's one more close relative worth mentioning, Albatrellus confluens.

Hoping to find and study Albatrellus myself, I've used gemini and what I know to construct this picture:

Ill have to gove it a nibble test.

They regularly grew in small clusters of 2-4 and the cap never seems to go around the whole stipe, one side of the cap doesnt really seem to have a margin, its kinda just one piece, almost like conks can get

Update - mild taste raw. I was gonna toss em in a big batch of cream of mushroom, but texture reports seem to make dehydration followed by braising will be best

Tnx for the update. That elimates A.confluens.
I refreshed my memory on citrinus:
Albatrellus citrinus is an uncommon, lemon-yellow mushroom-forming fungus species in the family Albatrellaceae, first described in 2003. Initially confused with the North American species Albatrellus subrubescens, this European fungus was distinguished through careful examination of its physical characteristics and DNA analysis.

So it was a non starter since your location is usa, your counterpart is A.subrubescens.

Also AI pic represents avallaneus much darker than what I think this species is. I should probably look for original description.

We are left with 3 names, with always a possibility of maybe being undesribed secies, especially when it comes to obscure genera such as Albatrellus

Perhaps there exist a person that specilazed in this genus and can tell by the details presented what it is, but its not me. Personally I would identify tree type, splash it with KOH, then submit for ITS sequencing.

Sorry for double post, this is what I believe is bona fide A.avellaneus:

Your collection lacks the distinct hazel-brown scaly appressed squamules on a yellowish/buff base that characterize A. avellaneus.
Epithet avellaneus refers to hazelnut brown color.

I am now confident your find cant be A.avallaneus, leaving us with A.ovinus and A. subrubescens. First is edible, second might be mildly toxic.

Sorry for triple post, damn the kicks I get from this.

I ve noticed you commented that it developed blue green stains, and M.kuo on his page under A.ovinus description states: sometimes bruising faintly greenish or yellowish (on pores)

I think dark reddish/violet spots on the cap would indicate A. subrubescens, but I see none. And subrubescens is often listed as inedible, likely referencing its initial acrid/peppery/bitter taste.

Seems like its sunwashed in one of the pics making it more yellow than it is, derailing my reasoning.

I think after careful consideration, you have the most common species, A.ovinus. I cant tell with ultimate certainty, maybe someone else chimes in, but as it is, I cant give green light for consumption.

Not sure what youre talking about bud
OP ? arent you the OP ?

Everything i said refers exclusivly to the very first post in this thread. Albatrellus species posted alongside obvious as fuck Guepinia and P.papilionaceus.

Your most recent photos are what ? Separate Albatrellus collection ? Or the harvest from the cluster presented in the original photos (post #1 in this thread)?

The one in the new pic is the same species as the picture my dog is in, the following 2 pics in the op are a different specimen that wasnt collected but left in place

Collection "A" (dog Pic) always seemed to grow in clusters of 2-3 way less densely clustered than collection "B" also has a thicker, almost fuzzy skin on the cap

Damn. I was under the impression that the white pore polypore had been photographed three times from separate angles—all at the same locality, in a scattered distribution, with some in fused clusters and others growing solitary.

It's possible that there are indeed two different Albatrellus species present, which would be weird.

However, it's also possible that there is only one species, as sources describe ellisii as growing 'solitary to scattered, gregarious, or in fused clusters'—so these could all be ellisii.

According to Index Fungorum, Scutiger ellisii is currently Albatrellopsis ellisii (and it seems it was placed in Albatrellus for a while). iNaturalist still uses the name Scutiger ellisii, so I have no idea what's going on molecularly or where this species actually belongs taxonomically.

It would help to investigate whether the fused ones also stain as the dog ones, and what do they taste like. I assume you only did nibble test for the dog ones, which you harvested, as per my current understanding.

all in all, I think fused ones are probably Albatrellus ovinus and the dog ones are as you identifed, probably Albatrellus ellisii, as they indeed look different. which makes this very interesting find overall
