DEA bans sale and possession of 7-OH, scheduling kratom compound as Schedule I for 2 years

SEATTLE (KATU) — On Aug. 25, 2026, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration made 7-hydroxymitragynine, also known as 7-OH, illegal to sell or possess. The drug was placed in Schedule I for two years.

“Schedule I drugs, substances or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” the DEA stated.

University of Washington Health says 7-OH is an opioid and a minor component of the kratom plant.

“Until Aug. 25, it was sold over the counter in a synthetic, highly concentrated form,” the university stated. “These 7-OH products are unsafe and have led to addiction and overdose.”

“People who are addicted to the drug may switch to more dangerous substances as a result, increasing their risk of overdose and other harms,” said Caleb Banta-Green, an addictions expert at UW Medicine.

Banta-Green said people addicted to 7-OH should speak with their doctors or call the Washington Recovery Help Line.

TLDR:

  • 7-OH and mitragynine extracts, as well as plain kratom leaf, are not currently scheduled.

  • The DEA action targeted MGM-15, MGM-16 & MITRAGYNINE PSEUDOINDoXYL only.

  • The DEA extended the comment period regarding 7-OH specifically until September 10, 2026, so they're getting a little pushback, but they obviously have their sights set on scheduling 7-OH as well.
