All my pots outside have been wet for weeks. Even the peyote.  Its been raining so much this summer idk if they've had dry pots all summer.
Its cannabis soil with a little extra perlite.
I need to repot them with like 50% perlite.

Stagger, I love the amount of random goop you've got going on in your pots.

The grass, the dandelion (?), the, I should say, standard stuff that pops out of compost.

I tried to say that I'm too anal about my watering regime. I only water the seedling cacti enough to allow any non-succulent companion plant to survive. But your cacti are clearly flourishing on way more water than I give mine.

May I recommend a more mineral dense mix. Instead of just 50% perlite.

Last mix i made was an effort to make a more permanent substrate for large, heavy, long lived cacti that were likely to spend many years in the same pot.

The initial reason was to prevent compaction leading to anaerobic soil that would become wet and never dry, when it did dry would become a hydrophobic lump that wouldn't take in water properly.

I've found that over long time spans, typical organic soil or potting mix will break down and become dead compacted dirt. Adding perlite only creates small air pockets inside which end up being surrounded by the dead dirt or crushed into powder.

I used a mix of scoria(small and medium grade), zeolite (in the form of seasol plant health granules), perlite, agricultural charcoal, gypsum, and some leftover blue metal / basalt I had laying around for slow release silica and extra weight.

It all serves a purpose in my imagination.

It can never stay too wet no matter how much water it gets, but holds lots of moisture and nutrients within the aerated minerals and microsopic pores of the zeolite and charcoal, which also draws in positive ions like ammonium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium and act as slow release fertiliser.

The roots always have oxygenated zone which naturally boosts nitrification via the nitrogen cycle and also with the added assistance of the charcoal preventing bad bacteria and chemicals forming in anaerobic soil.

The blend was slightly by feel at the time. 2 bags of scoria, a bag of perlite, half a bag of zeolite and charcoal, few scoops of gypsum and blue metal.

When re-potting I mixed in the original sad dead dirt from all the pots into the volcanic mineral mix and added more basic potting mix and microbial rich soil from compost bin as a kind of starter culture for live soil.

I aimed for 50/50 soil to mineral by volume, was more about a nice visual consistently tho.

Then finished with a top dressing of scoria.

I feel like they really enjoy the new substrate compared to the regular mix of generic potting mix and perlite.

That's great for seedlings and smaller plant, but I feel that larger more permanent plants need a more permanent home for their roots.

But im always looking for better ways. The cannabis soil just seeems to stay wet all summer. Not enough drainage.
I want some pulmice. I do have microbes too. So my stuff is a little off probably

Where do you source these other amendments? Is it all just online? I struggle to find anywhere local that sells anything other than standard potting soil.

I know the city's hydro/garden stores have a lot of this stuff if not all of it. I have 3 different cities within hour drive so they each have their own weed garden stores.

Thats me in ohio tho.

I do have a good hydro store i use that has a wide selection of nutrients etc but they dont have much for different soil substrates outside of bagged ocean forest.

Pic tax. Got this mislabeled NOID at a local Armstrong nursery. Looks like it has some bridgesii genetics and its recen growth has been real funky.

Pumice is similar to perlite, it's less floaty and brittle. I would have liked to use pumice but I already had perlite.

Most of those things are in any gardening section with the fertilizer and stuff. Some will be with landscaping supplies, like the scoria. Basalt / blue metal is used for drainage in building, so can be in the trades supplies section with concrete and things.

You don't have to use all the stuff I mentioned, I just went all in kind of thing. Just consider what each ingredient does and make what you can.

Another good addition which I would have used but didn't have available was diatomaceous earth.

Some areas are blessed with cheap pumice, and some (like mine) it's almost impossible to find locally. It sucks, because it's awesome for cacti and succulents.

Scoria is almost as good, but not quite imo. At least it's available pretty much everywhere.

There used to be a company out of Oregon that was using recycled glass to make what was basically a lightweight pumice called Growstones. They shut down because the state basically didn't want them taking the glass out of circulation, and was trying to make them get some super expensive license to continue. Great idea though, I wish someone else would pick it up.

That and it leaches metals into the soil so they may have run into environmental regulatory issues as well. I got some of that stuff once and it was definitely a mix of colored glasses melted down and puffed and crushed.

That's possible too, I suppose.

The stuff I got was white/grey pumice colored, but it's likely they used some colored glass, since a lot of recycled glass is brown or green bottles.
