RESEARCH: Looking for participants for a questionnaire investigating people's motivations for using psychedelics
    #29471486 -

Hi all!

My name is Katie Lawson and I am a Clinical and Health Psychology master's student at the University of Liverpool.
I am looking to recruit participants for a scale development study, aiming to develop a questionnaire to assess people’s motivations for taking psychedelics, with the aim of producing a valid questionnaire that can be used in future research. The study has been approved by the University of Liverpool's ethics team. It should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete, though the majority of participants take 5-10 minutes to finish the survey. All responses will remain 100% anonymous, with no details such as your name or email being asked. You are only eligible if you are aged 18+; live in either the UK, European Union, USA or Canada; and do not have a current diagnosis of depression, anxiety, or substance use disorder. You must also have used at least one of the following substances in the past 12 months: magic mushrooms, LSD, DMT, 2-CB, NBOMes, Ayahuasca, Salvia, Mescaline, PCP, Peyote, or 2C-T-4. Your participation is appreciated!

Here is the link to the survey:
https://livpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6W1PY5DvSJ0m9QG

We began recruiting participants on the 16th of January 2026, and data collection is estimated to end in June.
If you have any questions please contact the student researcher, Katie Lawson, at hlklawso@liverpool.ac.uk or via the Shroomery messaging system, and I can refer you to my supervisor if required.

Thank you in advance!
Katie

I was filling out the questionnaire on page 3, answered all of the question, hit next page, it remained on the same page and again insisted 'please answer the question. I checked had answered all the question, tried to continue and got 'please answer the question' you should fix your questionnaire

Why is it a requirement that one took something in the last year?
If one took psychedelics before and made a longer pause or ended their journey or got what they needed out of it they still had a motivation to do that and that doesn’t change if one consumed in the past year or not.
Just my thoughts about that

Hi Katie,

As someone with an addiction to jenkem, I was wondering if you might include jenkem in your questionnaire as well, or maybe an addendum? Jenkem seems to have quite a synergetic effect when listening to music as well, especially when listening to the band, "The Toilet Bowl Cleaners."

All the best.

I completed your questionnaire, good luck with your thesis!

It feels worth noting that PCP and Salvia are both *very* distinct from each other and from all the other substances you list (from both a pharmacological and subjective effects perspective).

I read all of your criteria and it seemed like I matched your criteria for this study, however after completing the qualtrics I was informed that I didn't. Part of your inclusion criteria is not having used psychedelics for a mental disorder, but I was very clear in my answers I do not. 🤷‍♂️

Hi! Sorry for the late reply.
I agree that past experiences are still important, but responses will be more accurate if the experience was more recent. If someone used a substance 15 years ago, for example, then they may misremember slightly, making their answers less accurate. I wouldn't be able to take it either (obviously I can't anyway because I am involved in the research, but if for example I wasn't) because I haven't taken a psychedelic in nearly two years.
Thank you for your interest anyway!

Hi, sorry for the late response.
Thank you so much! Yes I agree they are very different, but because we ask people at the start which substances they have taken, we will then be able to look at which motivations/questions seem to link more with each susbtance.
Thanks again!
Katie

Hi, sorry for the late response! A few people seem to be having this issue, I have been in contact with the support team for the survey platform and can't seem to resolve this issue, but I have emailed my supervisor to see if he has any advice or can help sort it.
I really appreciate your interest and time anyway!
Katie

I just took the survey questionnaire. It's short and painless, and yet I didn't qualify, for some unknown reason

Yes, I too received a message that I was ineligible for the study due to parameters laid out in the information sheet but this is absolutely not the case. There is no reason why I should have been disqualified as a participant in the research. Pretty annoying really, as I feel that the person conducting the research has just wasted my time.

I agree. If you’re going to do a legitimate study then take down ALL the data.  Setting parameters and limits create a bias for your study and give you misleading information. Do science for the sake of science here , doesn’t need to be wrong to right , the information is what’s imperative and productive

Hi Katie,

First off, good luck with your master's thesis! Scale development is a massive undertaking, but a highly necessary one for psychedelic research.

While I might not fit the exact 12-month criteria for the survey due to recent health adjustments, I wanted to share my perspective on motivations, as it spans decades of experience.

For me, it started entirely out of curiosity back in the day. A guy I worked with at a fast-food restaurant had some paper LSD, so I bought two tabs. At first, I thought I got burned because nothing happened right away, but boy was I mistaken. After the first one didn't seem to do anything, I took the second, and it turned into a night I will never forget.

What instantly hooked me wasn't just the visual aspect; it was the deep thought and the feeling of being an observer on an entirely different level. Eventually, I realized that the LSD back then felt a bit "dirty" physically. Once I experienced mushrooms, I found they provided a much better, cleaner, and more natural high, especially regarding how the body feels. I've been eating them ever since.

To break down my primary motivations over the years:

Escapism & Decompression: It’s a way to step away from the daily BS every now and then.

Cognitive Exploration: I truly enjoy the state of deep thinking that psychedelics facilitate.

Creativity: Some of my absolute best artwork has been inspired while being in one of these altered states.

As the years have gone by, my usage has naturally tapered off. The older I've gotten, the less I use them, though up until recently, I still enjoyed a trip a couple of times a year. Lately, due to a recent downturn in my health, I’ve chosen to stay away for a bit, as set and setting are everything and I don't want to risk a bad trip.

Hopefully, this qualitative insight helps add some color to the types of long-term motivations you are trying to capture in your questionnaire. Best of luck with the study!

Hello there, I am always excited to see research into psychedelics and there healing capabilities.

I'd be very keen to do your survey but I'm in Australia so I may not make the cut.

Psilocybin had really helped me unlock who I really am, Duke it who was underneath all those layers of conditioning.

Helped me to find real love for myself, both the dark and the light
Helped me to see that I'm certainly not alone in this world.

Thanks,

Rob.
