Did you just pour it ontop or soak it into the charcoal?

Makes sense. Peat is incredibly popular in commercial mushroom production for its water retaining and microbial qualities. It actually helps the fungus crowd out molds and yeasts and enters a symbiosis with it.

Charcoal is definitely underrated in mycology. We know it's good for fungi but haven't really tried to apply that yet.

what would be the best to soak it in for growing woodlovers, with no other solid substrate in the mix?

Good question, but I'd be bullshitting you trying to answer that cause my understanding of woodlovers is really lacking 😅

I'm also wondering if wood myc would even like a substrate like that honestly.

Peat bogs often straight up archive logs trapped inside.

My impression of the bioflower is that it is better, assuming I can reduce side pins.  Since I try to avoid single-use plastics such as liners, I am trying compression and colonizing in the dark to encourage top fruiting.  Hoping the colony will prefer the top if I reduce air pockets and don't have early light shining through the sides of the clear tubs.

This second round doesn't have a control, but I did case two trays today. And both had a much higher grain ratio.

So, the biochar I rinsed well to remove ash and then soaked for 24 - 48 hours in liquid nutrient water (both the NPK and micronutrients).

As far as contamination, the biochar also is an excellent substrate for microbes and has a high cation exchange ratio.  pH may also have been a factor.  As the biochar and calcium carbonate may have moved the pH closer to neutral.  I have a soil tester but I did not test prior to the experiment.

Verm as we know is also a very poor substrate for microbes, which is why we use it in pf tek.

Also possible an uncolonized grain made it into one tray and not the other 🤷‍♀️

I am comparing dry yield.  At first I suspected the CV+ was going to do better, as I lost a lot of coverage due to side pins on the bioflower.

But the third flush was much better.  Larger fruits too.  Of course, the CV+ was struggling with trich.

Eventually I will rerun the side by side.  But currently I'm trying to reduce side pins with the rest of the bioflower I prepared.

As for the other two suggestions, I'm not currently growing weed.  My partner is the one with the green thumb and she mostly likes garden.  But we do compost all my mushroom projects and use it there.  Which is part of the reason I wanted to start playing with biochar, to improve our clay soil quality.

Worm tea I'm sure would work too.  And I suspect that the 1-1-1 NPK is more than is needed.  But I was aiming for what the product uses and wanted to mimic it as closely as I could with the materials I had on hand.

The magic sourdough starter

Experiment: to see whether mycelium can grow in a stable community with bacteria eg in sourdough.

Spores were started 15 days ago using just a small amount of white flour (1/8th tsp in 1 cup) until the mycelium grew thick. No bad smell. Intention was to adapt the spores to the bacteria in flour by only using a little bit.

1 day ago mixed with white flour until it essentially reached a 80-100% hydration dough. Poured it over, after a bit had to stir it.



I will feed it later but I'm gonna have to do some research on how to maintain sourdough.

Every day you take part of the sourdough and add it to the new flour and water. If you leave sourdough starter for too long it can go bad.

I started feeding the sourdough starter daily since my last post, and putting the half you're supposed to discard into the compost bin.

When checking out the compost bin I was very surprised... lots of mycelium hairs extending out from the flour.





Could it be that in bacterial substrates, mycelium piggybacks on bacterial biofilms - and then when conditions are right exposes itself? It might be functionally invisible until conditions cause it to grow - conditions like drying out, exposed to air, soil microbes etc. In the wild, mushrooms fruit from a dung pile that's starting to dry out.

Yesterday I took the half of the starter that I've discarded and put it in a small plant pot, on which I've covered a thin layer of this compost that was already getting mycelium on it. (Mycelium parts flipped upside down).



Update: 3 days later, possible recovery on the compost layer? (Notice the fuzzy growth at the top)

In order to keep the sourdough from going bad, you can keep it in the fridge. IME sourdoughs can grow mold in about 3-4 days without feeding it.


I would say that mycelium definitely has a habit of cohabiting with bacteria (especially in the wild) and that your theory of when the myc gets the correct conditions it will reveal itself, is true.

And the sourdough that you discard can be used to make bread, the only reason for discarding it is to keep the starter able to fit into the fermentation vessel
