Hypochlorous acid

Hi.

I stumbled on Hypochlorous acid on some facebook growing group. It seems it's quite widely used on mushroom farms. Do you guys have any insight about it? It should be easier to nose and skin than bleach but still having the same effect.

Could it be used to cleaning FC's, maybe even keeping fogger water reservoirs clean? Sprayed to FC with those electronic fogging machines, reducing clean time?

I use HOCL quite a bit. For cleaning/fogging grow tents and for cleaning my humidifiers.  You could definitely use it to clean your fruiting chambers.  Just be sure to wipe up the residue.  It breaks down to salt and water and could possibly leave salt residue behind.

I make gallons of HOCl at work every day, it's the main cleaner we use for our equipment. Lovely stuff really. Nowhere near as harsh on the human body as typical hypochlorite bleach, but still very effective at inactivating organisms. Plus it's dirt cheap, salt + water + a bit of vinegar to keep the pH happy.

We use the "Force of Nature" brand of electrolyzers at work, but there are far cheaper options out there that would probably do just as well. And you can make your own juice for pennies so no need to buy their stupid pods.

That said I've never used a fogger with it. I imagine that would be a bit rougher on the eyes and nose, so one would want to be rather careful. And it does leave a bit of salt behind so do be aware of that. Oh and it does generate a bit of chlorine gas while it's being made. Not a great deal, but don't hover over the pot as it's fizzing if you value your sinuses.

If someone runs a full fledged mushroom farm, there are pool chlorination units starting from special pool-salt in big bags especially for chlorination, and one such unit, costing $150-300 can churn out big volumes of HOCl in very little time if you simply lower salt level and go with a very short runtimes.

That salt especially for pool chlorinators, is the salt you want to use in any HOCl device, as its optimised to conserve the anode, the part that wears most.

MMO anodes and titanium cathodes can be bought on the cheap, single or paired, again China, for those wanting to make custom units.

Dont run any unit too long, you’ll get sodium chlorate as an impurity or the main product, using this to desinfect presents a serious fire hazard over time if the oxidizer accumulates in your combustibles. Wooden lab benches and more unfortunately, worker clothing while worn, splashed with SC solution and dried up, have been known to ferociously ignite on friction or impact, or by cigarette ashes.


Pool-grade salt such as Poolsel is not chemically different from ordinary NaCl; its advantage is high purity and the absence of additives. It typically contains ≥99.8% NaCl, with very low levels of calcium, magnesium, insoluble minerals and other impurities, and no anti-caking agents. This minimizes electrode scaling, deposits, corrosion and unwanted side reactions in the electrolytic chlorinator. The controlled crystal size mainly ensures clean handling and predictable dissolution. In short, it is purified, additive-free NaCl selected to minimize contaminants that could interfere with or damage the chlorinator, rather than NaCl with inherently better electrolysis properties.
