that might just have something to do with it! Fill up a bucket and let it sit out side in the sunand breath for the day. The chlorine disapates while it rests in the open air. If that doesnt work then it probably isnt the water itself.

I use tapwater routinely to make up sawdust and spawn, but when it comes to misting primordia I'm anal and use only distilled water out of a bottle. Chlorinated city water has lots of things that both plants and mushrooms don't like very much, such as chlorine, fluoride, various trace metals, and frequently a low-level bacterial count.

thanks for the help. I am curious if anyone has actualy noticed Shiitake primordia react to city water in such a way that the caps refuse to form or form disfigured.

Elevated carbon dioxide levels in your grow chamber should be another parameter you should check out. Too much CO2 can inhibit primordia, or cause unusual growth patterns.

^I was about to say, you should look to your FC conditions first. As far as the water, I have used tap water to soak my shiitake blocks a few times, and I was left with a dismal harvest. Now it's spring water for dunking and distilled water for misting.

Also, if you keep your RH high enough, misting isn't necessary!
