Woodlover Gardening Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms * 1
    #29516163 -

If you hunt woodlovers in nature or the fresh mushrooms section of your supermarket  you have access to fresh mushrooms and thus live mycelium of mushrooms that grow on wood.

It is very possible that you for whatever reason cannot or will not commit to proper mushroom growing, yet you love woodlover mushrooms and would love to use a no-tech, zero resource, non-meticulous method that gives you a decent chance of getting a woodlover grow going without turning your house into a biolab that your housemates or visitors might take issue with, or that you cannot give the required care due to perfectly valid reasons like poverty, lack of space and time, disability, inability, or being lazy as fuck which too can be perfectly valid.

We all want you to teach yourself to become the Admiral of Agar, the Lieutenant of Liquid Culture and the Baron of Bulk, and to help yourself and others in this fantastic hobby that has wonderful things to offer to make the world a better place.

But!

That might not be for you, and that is OK

Woodlover mushrooms, hunted cultivated or storebought, are living mycelium.

If you buy any of the right kinds of hardwood chips, or have access to freshly cut logs of the right hardwood trees, you have a substrate that is not easily overwhelmed by molds and the like, which de facto is mostly selective towards woodlover growth.

Those wood chips, suppose you soaked those for 24 hours or so in a solution of 100gr lime (calcium hydroxide, the construction material) or 100ml additive-free 5% Sodium hypochlorite household bleach, in 10 liters of water.

This would rehydrate the wood chips and at the same time pasteurize them, a variant on a technique used by some commercial Oyster Mushroom farms to pasteurize the much more readily infected substrate that is uncomposted straw.

So babble cut short: dissolving 1 part lime or bleach into 10 parts water and soaking the right kinds of woodchips into that overnight - entirely not rocket science.

If you were to take your fresh woodlover mushrooms onto your cutting board and cut them to pieces, then put on disposable gloves or use plastic bags as mittens, and you would mix the mushroom pieces into the pasteurized chips, there would be wood-mycelium contact, the mushroom bits grow out into the woodchips, colonizing them

A streamlined procedure for this is the Woodlover Smoothie TEK a tried and true method that led to expansion of The Little Wavy Caps Patch That Could, a perennial outdoor Psilocybe cyanescens patch that was kept going by semi-annually adding more wood chips for the mycelium to eat.

If you have freshly cut logs of the right kinds of hardwood, big ones or small logs sold as firewood, you can drill holes in these, stuff woodlover mushroom bits into the holes, fill further with sawdust and seal with wax, then leave the logs outside in the shade to get rained on, while your woodlovers colonize the log from within.

shiitake, oysters, wavy caps, azures - you name it!

Stamets recommends techniques like, putting a piece of cardboard  on a natural or cultivated woodlover patch, letting the mycelium colonize the cardboard, then putting the colonized cardboard piece inbetween woodchips to colonize them from the cardboard.

Given what you factually do, what I suggest here can be considered "woodlover gardening" as opposed to "mushroom cultivation", which is better but far more elaborate.

So if you are a mushroom hunter or another newbie to mushroom propagation, or a mushroom cultivator who wants to easily expand the fruits of his cultivation efforts, Woodlover Gardening might be a fruitful expansion of your activities.

Success rate is a bit lower than proper mushroom cultivation, but it's so easy a literal 10yo kid could do this if he learned about it in school. Please learn the ins and outs of mushroom cultivation, but either way, give woodlover gardening a chance!

Woodlover Gardening

In this thread, let us focus on using Woodlover Gardening techniques to propagate hunted or storebought woodlover mushrooms of culinary and medicinal varieties.

Aforementioned 10yo kid could grow oysters, shiitake and the like, straight from the supermarket mushrooms section to the pet store or garden store for the right wood chips, in complete simplicity.

This nobrainer method enables many people to propagate mushrooms, to augment their kitchen in the simplest way possible.

Let us develop this for the sake of all kinds of woodlovers!

I once researched whether the Clorox disinfecting bleach sold in stores has additives that might be harmful to a person's health, and it does have additives so I dont use it.

Any clues on a brand that might be a pure, additive-free sodium hypochlorite? Ai says you need a lab grade or Technical grade bleach.

In any case, I do use a food grade lime and have had good results.

I live in a completely different country, but generally the name brand stuff has additives and nonbrand  cheap no-frills bottles are often the unadulterated household chemical.

In local supermarkets, the cheapest hypochlorite tends to be the unprocessed repackaged industrial product.

If you, like, have a pleurotus farm, it can be advantageous to pick up pails of swimming pool hypochlorite, and obviously you can opt for pool-shock  calcium hypochlorite, thats the lime and hypochlorous acid combined - better for shrooms anyway, calcium not sodium.

From Chinese marketplaces you can buy USB chlorinators, a few bucks, you plop it into water and salt and voila, sodium hypochlorite.. or let it run longer to make chlorates for fireworks making. (watch the fuck out with that, chlorates are very sensitive!) If you run a commercial mushroom farm, oysters or shiitake, a home pool chlorinator unit becomes interesting, as you can literally turn water  + salt into bleach with electricity. The technology took a leap during covid, the Chinese found it practical to have e unit on a cord you plop into a glass of salt water to make bleach powered by USB.
Next-level Chinese innovation, right? Fēi cháng gǎn xiè nǐ!

Lime should work fine and chemically is more straightforward than introducing activated chlorine,

I wonder whether the cheapest grade if construction lime would be good to go for substrate sterilization. Manufacture of lime in most cases intrduces no toxins that would render it improper for an external use as a desinfectant.

lets ask AI..

Generally yes—with a caveat. Construction-grade hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)₂) is often used successfully for alkaline pasteurization of straw in Pleurotus cultivation (e.g., ~1% solutions) because the process tolerates some impurities and relies mainly on achieving a high pH (>11–12). However, “construction grade” can vary in purity and may contain inert fillers, magnesium compounds, or trace contaminants (including heavy metals or additives) that aren’t ideal for biological use. For small-scale or commercial growing, most cultivators prefer agricultural/horticultural lime labeled as high-calcium hydrated lime (or food-grade pickling lime) for more consistent results and lower contamination risk. If you do use construction-grade lime, make sure it is explicitly hydrated lime (not quicklime or dolomitic lime), finely powdered, free of unknown additives, and from a reputable supplier.

ha! so there is that!

So 1 part lime to 10 parts water, by weight?

that would be 1g lime per 10mL water?

But Agar wedge says here that they go for 1g per 630mL  (1gal = 3785mL, 6g/gal = 630g/mL)

Seems like a big difference.  Are we all talking about Hydrated Lime?

Agar Wedge said:
Step 2. Mix the Lime in: Put on protective equipment, then fill your vessel with a couple inches of water, this process uses cold water, coldest that comes out of your tap is fine. Add your hydrated lime close to the surface of the water. This way you make less dust. Stir with a stick or rod of sorts. I use an old wooden rake handle. Fill your vessel until the appropriate PH is reached. What you want is 12.5ph, I like using a PH meter to avoid weighing out hydrated lime. I just dump a 2/3 a half pint full of lime and fill until it's 12.5 But they are expensive ($70-$110) and require maintenance. Approximately 12.5 ph is also achieved using 6 grams per gallon. Another great way to test the PH more accurately without a ph meter or by weighing lime is by using PH test strips.

Update 3/22/26 I stopped using a ph meter and scale. Filling a half pint jar with hydrated lime and dumping it in approximately 1/3 full brute bucket works just as well without the extra work.

If you dissolve 100 g (0.1 kg) of lime or bleach in 10 liters of water (10 kg) that would be a 1/100 dilution.
