Rage Farming & how to resist
    #29640109 -

- Rage farming appears as a cynical political tactic designed to bait opponents into overreacting to a controversial statement.

- Rage farmers convince their followers that the other side are enemies to be destroyed.

- Rage farmers foster an environment where the interests of the few are more important than those of the many.

- For the rage farmer, anger is an end unto itself. As much as helping their side to win (and the other side to lose), animosity is the desired result.

- Social media companies and influencers — like Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, Alex Jones and others — are benefiting financially from this.

- Canada has also proven fertile ground for rage farming.

- Rage farming works best when it cultivates anger among its targets. Temper-inducing headlines, memes and statements tend to encourage the audience to seek out even more inflammatory information, thus prolonging the rage and deepening the target’s connection with them.

- Political operatives are enticed by rage farming. Beyond votes, it can help them cultivate a larger and more devoted membership and donor base. This creates a vicious cycle, of sorts. In order to maintain the allegiance of their followers, rage farmers must drum up more anger.

- We should call it out for what it is: a deliberate attempt to manipulate voters into becoming angry. Related to this, Canadians must realize that rage-baiting is not normal or productive, and that there are alternatives.

- Harassment of women, people of colour, and other traditionally marginalized groups is often the product of rage-farming.

- Once we are able to see rage farming for the manipulative tactic that it is, we can begin to bring democratic discourse back to its rightful place, rooted in understanding and building broader common ground to address the many challenges facing our society.

A simple Google search shows a study proving that the COVID vaccine killed 38 in just 2022.

In contrast, the Measles vaccine hasn't killed anybody.

So you're the "potato head".

Calling the enraged, uneducated and poorly anything any names at all, including "potato-heads" is a kind of rage baiting.

"The conflict between the two sides spirals into a pit of rage, with neither side really aiming to persuade as much as humiliate, discredit and vanquish the other."

Cousins of mine have made various attacks on my character:

"Stupid."

"No friends"

Any name calling at all or attacks on social standing is going to sow the seeds of anger and sadness.

You reap what you sow.

Human beings seem to have a rather hopeless need to blame, villainize, discredit, name-call, label and humiliate a targeted person. It could be a cousin, could be a politician, could be a group.

“The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities.”

Why are internet conversations so negative?

Godwin's law states that as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis approaches one.

This isn't literally true, but negativity does increase as online discussions grow longer. A new archival analysis of over 2 billion Reddit comments finds that online dialogue becomes more negative over time.

Negativity increases over time because social media users seek to make unique comments and stand out from others, and it is easier to differentiate oneself through negative comments (rather than through agreement).

You're objecting to being called names while describing others as "potato-heads" and "basically stupid." That seems like a double standard.

Also, instead of addressing the claims themselves (which should be straightforward if they're mistaken), you ask about their qualifications. If your point is that their arguments are wrong because they lack the right credentials, that's an appeal to authority rather than a response to the evidence.

Solid post, but I will point out that the examples given are one sided. It could give the impression that only one side of the isle is doing the rage-baiting which I don't think is true.

It's standard operating procedure in politics and life in general. Who has the high ground?

Behold, humanity.

yes I am reacting to being called names - that is a personalism here
my reference to potatoheads was non-specific, I am surprised that anyone here has self-identified as a potatohead and feels they have personally been maligned by me.

Covid, however, by now is mostly history but it was a huge rage farmed social experience.

something like that could easily come back. Right now I think the potatoheads have to line up in favor of global warming as being a hoax, meantime I am sitting in air conditioning just like The Donald (who denies global warming is real).

thanks for clarifying my transgression with authority.

So, sidestep the accountability point, reassert the original position, redirect to a new target. Is that a fair read of what happened here?

It's a philosophy forum. I'm free to address and be critical of the content posted here. This is nothing new for me or this forum. You are free to call people outside the forum names whether specific or non, but it seems ironic in the context of the thread.

I don't see why that's the relevant question, so I'll pass on it. As well, you declined to answer my question so I'm not sure why I would entertain yours.

My first comment was about name-calling and a double standard, then sidestepping, reasserting, and redirecting. Is bringing up these things itself rage farming?

I could ask the same of someone who characterizes large numbers of people as potato-heads and basically stupid.

Superficially, it's the one who feels laughingly superior, a kind of giggly, malicious, helium headed, giddy, smiling, "making-fun-of" the targeted person, or targeted group or even targeted social phenomena.

Rage farming is about pointing the finger at some lesser being or lesser action or lesser form of speech.

The farmer of rage doesn't necessarily feel much rage himself, he's more enjoying his aloofness from the group or targeted person.

The metaphorical phrasing, "A different type of agriculture", referring to rage farming, perhaps is an example of claiming 'higher ground'.

It's that metaphorical aloofness that makes rage farming what it is.  Perhaps there's no escaping it, it's just an arms race to see who can retreat into the best metaphors.

Re: Rage Farming & how to resist [Re: Cory Duchesne]

I think that's a reasonable impression. I question whether the rage is absent when there is enjoyment and aloofness on top of it. I think it's reasonable that coordinated efforts have an underlying power dynamic which is why it's pervasive in politics and political adjacent activism.

I will suggest though that clinical description and giddy mockery aren't the same affective state, even if both involve "distance."

Also, while your answer is relevant I was speaking to the substantive ground, and I would answer nobody has the higher ground when characterizing large groups of people and political operatives.

I will say though that rage is a human emotion and that rage itself is a reasonable response to real wrongs, and its total absence can just as easily signal apathy as it can wisdom. The question isn't whether anger is present, but whether it's proportionate to and accurate about what's actually happening.

The proportionality test, while philosophically sound, is also exactly the cover story every rage farmer already uses.

This makes the issue more complex, and to the degree that it is weaponized, it will be justified on such grounds. Further, when it is an accepted tactic and gets results, failing to engage in it is a game flaw. I think simpler aspects of human nature account for it's homogeneous nature, but the reality of its effectiveness when combined with virtuous comparison is a strong strategy for those who put power first, to disregard proportionality.

And as Machiavelli might suggest, power should be put first because without it little else is possible.

Everyone has their breaking point or threshold, I imagine.  Someone who enjoys stirring the pot and inciting rage most likely is someone who, when pushed or pressed at a certain point in their psychology, would explode in anger, rage, whatever you want to call it.

I was rather infuriated during covid, screaming and yelling at the pavement while I walked the streets, sitting in my attic by myself and cursing and yelling by myself.  What was it that got me so enraged and angry?  Many things. Many insults, many slights, many failed-broken relationships.

I suffer more from annoyance these days. I don't really feel anger or rage now that I get my monthly vaccine of apriprizole, but I still feel strong annoyance and negative sensations, when pushed or pressed. A lot of Dukkha. VERY strong Dukkha.

I suppose much of your strong annoyance and negative sensations are normal reactions to the world we live in, and that it's not all, but in part to unique modern issues that wouldn't have been issues in the past, either due to their absence or ignorance of them.

There's an app out now that monitors 500 news agencies and places the relevant news stories on a world map in real time. For the first time in history a person has all the negative news in the world at their fingertips in real time. People want such apps to be "more informed".

An example of rage bating on social media:

Quote:
I know why everything sucks...

...and it's because everything is fake

We are voting for fake candidates, who run on fake promises, inside a fake system that was never designed to fix anything.

We are raising kids in fake schools that teach fake history, fake science, which quietly produce fake adults who can't think for themselves.

Then they are getting fake college degrees that cost 4 years and six figures that teach fake education and they get fake jobs.

We are eating fake food, with fake ingredients, funded by fake research.

We are scrolling through fake lives, with fake relationships, who take fake, curated vacations to promote brands that make fake products.

We are watching fake news, about fake crises, produced by fake journalists, for fake outrage.

We are borrowing fake money that was printed from nothing, to fund a fake economy that would collapse in an afternoon if people stopped pretending it was real.

We are buying fake organic food that's just a paid label, and drinking fake juice with two percent juice in it, and putting fake cheese on cheeseburgers that's just "cheese product" on fake burger meat.

We are donating to fake nonprofits where the moeny never makes it to the people and then funding fake foreign aid that buys real weapons to prop up fake governments.

We are going to fake therapy that teaches fake coping skills instead of telling you hard truths.

We are buying fake furniture made of fake wood that's actually compressed sawdust and glue that looks like wood, ships in fourteen boxes with instructions written in a fake language that isn't quite any language, requires tools it doesn't include, takes 4 hours to build, wobbles on day 1, and is totally destroyed in 6 months.

We are downloading fake "free" apps that charge a subscription after three days for AI features that don't work, hidden behind a paywall we didn't see, protected by a privacy policy we didn't read, buried inside Terms of Service written by lawyers specifically so we wouldn't read them, that we agreed to by tapping a button the size of a thumbnail, that gave a company we've never heard of the right to sell our data to companies we'll never hear of, to build a profile on us we'll never see, to influence decisions we'll never know were made.

IT. IS. ALL. SO. FREAKING. FAKE.

And we all yearn for what was once real.

Don't you remember? Did you forget?

There was a time with a simple handshake between men was a contract.

When bread went stale because... well, that's what real bread does!

When kids played outside all day until it was dark, and nobody tracked them.

When a family could live off a single income.

When music was made by people who LIVED something real and you could feel it.

When schools was HARD... and that was the point!

When doctors knew your name and your family, they even came to your house,

When you bought something once... and it was yours forever.

When the chair your grandmother bought once lasted 70 years and she passed it onto your dad.

And now nothing is real, and that's why everything sucks.

Yeah, that binary or duality of fake vs. real turned out to be quite a snare for me. Anytime I was put uncomfortably on the spot and expected to act in response to a surprise invitation, I just deemed the persons as suspicious and judged by me as 'not real'.

I would insist 'just be real', and the more I put emphasis on the real, the more aggressive and offensive people would get with me. The more I demanded honesty and truth and accountability, the worse people's behavior would get.

Reminds me of a quote from ol' Schopenhauer:

“It is a wise thing to be polite; consequently, it is a stupid thing to be rude. To make enemies by unnecessary and willful incivility, is just as insane a proceeding as to set your house on fire. For politeness is like a counter--an avowedly false coin, with which it is foolish to be stingy.”

Practically everything has an associated nonzero probability of causing death.

A joint replacement surgery, done not to remedy a life-threatening condition but to enable a more comfortable life, has a fatality rate of 0.1% to 0.5%.

Hiking kills 4 out of 100,000 hikers.

Even the measles vaccine can instigate a fatal case of anaphylaxis, but it's treatable if addressed in time.

A heat wave in Europe this year has already caused an estimated 10,000 deaths in Germany alone.

As for the Covid vaccine, hundreds of millions of shots were administered in 2022, so I frankly find 38 fatalities (assuming there's any veracity to this figure) to be vanishingly small, especially in light of the much higher mortality rate associated with being afflicted with Covid without having received a shot.

But like the anti-masking nonsense and climate change denial, the temper tantrums against the Covid vaccine are all politically motivated.

Now look at the situation in the US: misinformation swirling about the Covid vaccine has spread like a cancer to hit all vaccines—including the measles jab. The predictable result: measles outbreaks (and whooping cough) are making a comeback all over the place. The fools denying their kids access to a measles vaccine are all as absolutely convinced that the cure is worse than the disease as you are convinced that the Covid vaccine is worse than Covid itself. How would you convince them otherwise? Their arguments are based on the same "logic" as yours.

Not all information is truth.

I think the rage comes from the tension of belief about something you care about (like covid policies) combined with the fact that we often don't really know. There is a lot of energy in protecting the belief because it doesn't have a solid foundation. It has to be defended, protected, propped up, and this defensiveness is where it links to anger. I feel attacked when my beliefs are questioned because my beliefs are tied to my identity.

I see this all the time in political discussions where people often can't even focus on the topic and end labeling each other.

By the way, Professor Googlesearch, there is nothing to substantiate your claim.

The primary source of the "38 deaths" figure comes from Pfizer’s 6-month interim clinical trial report submitted to the FDA, which involved 44,000 participants. Of those 38 deaths, 21 occurred in the vaccinated group and 17 occurred in the placebo group. Regulatory agencies and researchers reviewed all the fatalities and discovered that the deaths were due to typical, diverse causes such as heart disease or cancer, and were not related to the vaccination.

The study took place over half a year, from 2020 to 2021. Considering that the mortality rate in the US is over 700 per 100,000 per year, you might wonder why the number of deaths among the 44,000 was so low; but that's to do with the fact that clinical trials are not generally going to enlist people who are in very poor health or on death's door.
