great finds!  I so wan to find some Psilocybe caerulipes,  but I doubt that they grow here at all.

It says that they grow in my state,  but I have seen no evidence if this being so at all.

all august to mid september forest with high % of beech
lots of rain like 2+ days a week is the best 

dense undergrowth acting as a wind breaker creating a high humidity atmosphere ( lots of mosquito)

look for old fallen branches /trees, if you cant see any through the undergrowth look up for a beech missing large branches or a whole top and go look around those for debris .

keep your eyes on the ground as you walk, they can sprout from small branches under the leaf litter and can be quite small

Your habitat looks exactly similar to mine,  so next rains I'm going out to see what I can find  :yesnod:

I'd like to find some Gyms too,  but so far all I have found here are inactive ones  :smirk:

shroomlass found a rhubarb bolete in SA a week ago



healthier specimen and better photo nevertheless i was rapt to find a few in Victoria after years of searching

I call this book The Old Testament and A Field Guide To Tasmanian Fungi I call The New Testament. <<Recommend getting this to compliment Fuhrer's. A lot of the same mushrooms are on the mainland.

That's a second edition you have. The first addition has Mycena nargan on the cover. If you didn't know. I felt similar to you when I found those.

The obscure cocks are cool to find.

Can you tell me how to use the book? I thinks it's a great resource but when I'm trying to ID a mushroom in the field I find it hard because I can't look up the mushroom in the book based on observable characteristics?

I call them obscure cocks in my head. How else does one remember all these binomial names if they're not making up funny things to remember them by. Obscure Cocks = obscurecoccineus in my head at least!:yesnod:

Common names can be fun if you make them.

It's a good question. It doesn't have keys and there isn't an easy way to look species up from their features. It just lists Basidiomycetes in alphabetic order and then the Ascomycetes, with a dash of Myxomycetes to round things off.

Back in the day when I started. I basically flipped through that book and tried to memorise as much as I could of it. I'd find and take pictures in the field and then, at home, I'd flip through that book hoping for a match. This was before iNaturalist and even Mushroomobserver. I'd post things here too and we'd muddle through things.

That's about as good as you can do with this book until you get confident enough on identifying Genus levels. Once you can identify genus levels then you just go to the book and look for that genus to find your species. If it's there.


A Field Guide To Tasmanian Fungi has a key that works off of spore colour and lists things in the book based off spore colour too. I'm looking for a pdf of that right now for everyone. If I can't find one I may just post the key from that book to help you out.

The spore print key is helpful. I don't usually get enough in to actually do one but it's actually a really good thing to do

Yeah unfortunately I really didn't find the book useful at all for that reason. I absolutely need a quick way to find the species, just personally. Although the info in it is super in depth. It's just not the most pragmatic of books. Great quality photos!

iNaturalist app would probably be the one if you're looking for a quick ID. It's not perfect but I know a few Victorians that live on there and identify fairly quickly if they're online.

I bumped an old thread in the forum that has a link to 7 pdf's about different Victorian fungi. It has no keys but is one of the best resources out there. It's free too. Donations are accepted.

I can't find a pdf of the Tasmanian book so will post the keys somewhere soon.
