Man, i feel your frustration..

Best thing to do in this scenario. Be 10 steps ahead of the crowd.

With the knowledge you know now you are already ahead of many people just now getting into foraging and or photography and rampaging the forest with their eyes closed

You're now more aware of the spots that hold more moisture and can rely on during droughts. It takes years for people to get just that far because the weather is so finicky.

On a positive side there is a 1 to 2 year learning curve getting into mycology and exploring the woods

Some people hunt for 5 or 10 years dont find shit!

Just because people found your one spot, that could be the only spot they now go to for like the next 2 years, thats kinda how it goes when youre starting out you find a spot and stick to it, which buys you time to explore and establish new spots!

And if its a spot thats in a highly populated area it was bound to be found, if not already known, way before you were even interested in ovoids

Just some things to take into consideration. Theres many more spots where people dont go.

Peace my dood

No, I get what he's saying about trampling down everything & exposing the mycelium growth to the sun without even trying to cover it back up.  It's so sad.  Similar to  hunting asparagus in some ways.  You can't pick ALL sprouts & expect it to come back the following year.  You have to let a few grow & drop seed.  I know asparagus grows from the roots but how do you expect ANY new plants to appear if you don't let them mature?

Perhaps it's because I was taught from the beginning to always step lightly when hunting anything.  I've tried passing that to others throughout the years & unfortunately, a few ignore that even though after catching them doing it fell on death ears.  It's obvious they don't care even if you explain why they shouldn't & I regret teaching them in the 1st place.

Nice finds! I haven’t been to our last hunting spot in a while  I’m leaving it up to you , so make sure you don’t let them go to waste lol. Cheers to finding new spots in the future :irishtoast:

So,  It rained very little from the last time that I posted,  but I still manged to find about a few trips worth of ovoids,  from the very few spots that I managed to find this season,  every time I went out.

These were my last finds and I found them at the very last week of May.

Since then,  it got super humid and we have had too much rain! But alas,  the ovoid season was already over

I just don't understand these guys. The conditions are perfect now,  yet they have been done for about three weeks now

Well,  I brought home tons of mycellium,  so I'll be peachy keen next season  :yesnod:

But until then

They go for broke with their first flush.

Sure they have second and third flushes, but that first one is their money maker I think.

Happy season guys!

That makes since,  because some of the debris piles started out several feet tall and those ovoids broke them all the way down to the ground! I have never seen anything like it before,  ever!

I ended up getting multiple flushes from all the piles,  every time I went out,  since April the 14th.

Good that you found some voids finally kentucky man. We were rooting for ya. Our spots in Pennsylvania are still producing surprisingly. Welll, coming to an end I should say. Coulda made out with probably a pound of dried shrooms if I wanted, but I stopped at a few ounces because what would I do with so many???!

Since the thread may wind down until fall I will end in a high note with my best pics of the season:

They do fruit in the fall in PA, and questioning about through the entire summer if you aren't afraid to dig through the weeds/overgrowth for smaller flushes.

I took a real quick look yesterday mainly just trying to keep my mind straight, but wondering if I could have found what Pedelmaster found on his bike ride if I wasn't just quickly seeing if they were there(not sure I'd be picking any more until fall besides the one little one here and maybe one or two for within the next few days because of what I am being told and noticing about myself recently and these seem to help).

So,  I have made some nice ovoid patches here at the house. If i keep them hydrated and healthy throughout the summer, you think I could get them to fruit this fall when it cools down? The myc is eating through all the old wood and mulch that I have been feeding them.

I’ve been told new patches from scratch will likely take a year or so to begin fruiting. Not from experience do I say this.

Yes, orange Joe will be our spokesperson and let us know if they fruit all summer.

I thought that was from using stem butts though?

I started up mine in a big old half whiskey barrel planter. It's filled all the way up with soil with about a 12 inch layer of colonizing mycellium at the top. I also keep adding more wood on the top when the mycellium starts showing

I also have some other big pots going the same exact way. So far the oldest one has almost totally devoured all the wood chips and debris that I fed it and it's a solid block of mycellium underneath the new wood that I add. The tubs also never gets dry and I water them every couple of days or so.

I believe the reason why the season is so short and awful now,  is because it gets too hot and it doesn't rain nearly the whole summer fall and winter here anymore. last summer,  fall and winter was the driest that we've ever had on record! I think becuse of this,  the mycellium just doesn't get the moisture it needs to fruit properly the following spring. It didn't even start properly raining here until ovoid season was nearly over and what I did find,  was always growing out of piles of very dry wood debris.

So I figure,  if I keep my home made patches thoroughly fed and watered,  there is no reason why they shouldn't fruit this next spring

Not doing anything new here, but just wanna share with the east coast ovoid bros a little experiment im trying. I took 2 talenti gelato containers and poked 8 holes roughly 1.5 inches apart at the bottom on the sides of the container with a thumbtack, and poked the same amount of holes around the middle section of the container. Then i took some wild chips from a local mulch pile, hydrated them and threw that in the container along with 3tbsp of sawdust and a bunch of ovoid stembutts.
I wanted to see if theyed colonize better in the fridge vs roomtemp
Heres results from leaving in my fridge(made on may 30th):

my control container that sat at roomtemp was doing okay at first until fungus gnats took over so i trashed that lol

Anywayss i know its best to just make a patch outside, itd colonize faster and you can basically forget about it once youve made them a nice home. But the purpose was to see how well itd do in the fridge. Maybe good idea if its dead winter and you want to expand some stembutts or wild spawn to more chips for more patches to plant in upcoming spring. I like the talenti containers cuz its a very clear but sturdy plastic and the holes were easy to poke through without it cracking. Theres likely better containers but these were the best i had on hand

That looks super healthy!

I'm thinking you could fruit that once it's more colonized and put into warm conditions.

If I am not allowed to ask for ID in this thread my apologies but arent these ovoids? Black spores and teal bruising are both there.
