before 1st, if they've begun to blue, or took along time colonizing, small fruits, etc.
every other flush thereafter, or as taz said, shorten the dunk time and go more often.

What is the benifit of cakes really? My buddy just cased his first pf style cakes last night. He usually uses rye because his br supplier had contams in it. So this was his first time with the pf cakes. The cakes seemed much drier than rye. It takes way longer to colonize. He has never grown fruit from a cake but sees no reason why. His last batch of 6 1/2 pints of SA's in rye and cased on straight verm yielded about 300 fruits on the first flush. Oh, my buddy cased his pf cakes in coco fiber and will start a thread about the progress in a few days.

for you, perhaps, there is no advantage.
but hundreds, even thousands, have grown their first shrooms on cakes.
that's the advantage--it's newbie-friendly.
no pressure cooker, no agar, nothing very complicated at all.
so what if rye can out-produce it ?
that's beside the point.
cakes don't need to be cased, they can be fruited invitro while hidden behind a bookcase, they are contam-resistant, etc.
different strokes for different folks.
grow on rye if you want to.
just don't look down on others because they choose differently.
