how are these lions mane looking?? * 1
    #29382246 -

hey everyone!! i’ve grown actives for awhile but only now am really delving into the gourmet world. i’m running a JCM. for panaeolus, & figured i’d try some lions mane in there. i happened to have an LC syringe from a friend, & made some cakes. kinda just freestyled it but it’s a mix of wheat, straw, & sawdust. i know cakes/bottles probably aren’t the traditional route to grow LM but im kinda just trying to work with what i got. not trying to go huge or take a tent or anything. this is as far as ive ever gotten with LM & mostly i’m curious if these fruits look obviously stressed in any way or are indicating anything conditions wise!!

i think the 3 jars in the last pic look a little extra funky bc i was late to open the jars & they got aggressive towards the lid where the FAE was

thanks!!

Welcome to the tastier side of mushrooms! lol
I'd say the mycelium looks overgrown and your LM fruits look to be reaching for air unless they're hericium coralloides. Increase fae if possible and continue on, they look good, you'll get some nice chunks you can stir fry or w/e you had in mind.

thanks friend! i figured the FAE was lacking quite a bit. i think my current tub set up is a bit restrictive, might set up a fan to run once every few hrs or so. not too worried about the aesthetics, as long as they still taste alright im not gonna complain too much  i think it’ll be a bit easier to get these down than what im used to growing!!

King oysters like higher co2 and less air exchange but in general most gourmets like much more fae than actives. You might look into growing some kings if you like the results here.
Throw that fan on, if they start turning brown its drying out. Post a pic before you harvest, hope you enjoy.
I love cooking my shrooms in fat. Last night I threw 3 chicken legs in the cast iron skillet with some carrots and shitakes, a knob of butter and a dash of oil, 45 minutes @410, served with rice. Absolutely delicious. Any fat will do, tonight I'm making a steak and will cook some more shitakes and greens from the fat at the end.

i completely forgot, i’ve actually grown king oysters in monotubs & some nursery plant pot grows along side some grass!! i should absolutely get kings started again, though i do hope to be able to grow all edibles/medicinals relatively well in this set up eventually!!

some of the tubs ended up getting pretty weird, as you can see in that pic lol. def had some normal ones too though!

so i made some updates to the tub. added a pair of USB fans set to low. the timer i have can be set in increments of 15 minutes at the fastest, so i have the fans set to turn on once for 15 minutes about every 3 hours. i need to do some testing to see roughly how much it drops humidity, but i think its currently doing more than nothing. my climate is very dry so i didnt wanna fry the fruits for blasting them with 15 minutes of high airflow, but i might add a few more holes where the fans are if i feel it’s still a little low on air exchange

the fans are set in a push/pull combo (like you would a basic computer case) & the tub is otherwise just a standard pastywhyte style EZ dial with the lid closed all the way (5 holes on the short sides where the fans are attached, 3 on the long sides lower down. these are currently micropore taped). it’s only been like this for about a day so it’ll take a little longer for the fruit morphology to tell me if i need more air exchange but im happy with how it turned out!!

these lions mane fruits touched & then fused together!! hard to get a pic of but it was super trippy seeing them attached to each other lol. i think i need to harvest some of the ones that are starting to turn darker off-white. but there’s a lot of new growth!! the larger jars are right near the exhaust fan upper holes, im curious how they’ll respond

also, thank you for that recipe!! imma have to cook that up, shiitake are one of my favorite. so versatile! i’ve really enjoyed lions mane & shiitake in butter with just salt & pepper, i need to get a little fancier!!
