Is my monotub set up good for BRF jar cakes
    #29364780 -

So I ordered a kit to take BRF jars from inoculation all the way to fruiting. It involves a layer of perlite and putting your fully colonized cakes on squares of tinfoil on top of the perlite inside the monotub. My tub is small. It’s about 12”x12”x12”. I added some of my own upgrades where I purchased a Reptile fogger and drilled a hole just big enough to fit the tube in. The fogger comes with the ability to measure the humidity percentage and temperature inside of the monotub and allows you to preset exactly what temperature and humidity level you want the monotub to stay at and automatically turn on and off the fog and I keep a heating mat underneath the mono tub, which keeps it at exactly 75°. I keep the mono tub at about 98% humidity. I keep three of the four holes on the sides with filtered patches on them to allow air in as well as the fogger regularly, pushing fresh air with the fog multiple times a daily. Does this sound like an effective way to get my cakes to fully fruit or is there something else I should be doing?

You’re over thinking it.  How many cakes we talkin?  The fogger is overkill, especially with perlite already in there.  You can literally fruit a pf cake inside a sandwich bag with some syringe holes poked in it

The cake with some wet verm or coir/verm on the top and bottom keep the microclimate where it needs to be for the small space.  The container should also be appropriate for the amount of cakes.  You can see from that pic that a single cake doesn’t need more than a couple inches of space around it to fruit properly.  The less space = the less area that proper conditions need to be maintained in.

Here’s 3 cakes in a large ziplock on perlite in a container.  The ziplock has syringe holes poked through both sides of the bag every 2”

Best to keep it simple with cakes

I’m also created a much larger mono tub that I’m gonna try and do a bulk grow in which is why I bought the fogger. I figure I’m gonna use it for that in the future. Plus, I just like gadgets.

Unless you re planning to grow exotics, I'd forgo hooking up a fogger to a tub.  A monotub is an already perfect environment for fruiting cubensis and in all liklihood you are going to have a more difficult time fruiting by hooking up the fogger.  If you want to build a system that works for fruiting exotics then you should do it right, build a dreamer tub:

Automated fruiting chamber (Dreamer Tubs)

However, since you sound like you will be fruiting cubensis I again stress that a regular ass non-automated monotub is the way to go.  Here's a link to a monotub how-to:

Pastywhyte's EZ dialed monotubs

And here's a link to an explanation why you SHOULD NOT try to automate a monotub:

Box fan flowhoods, Glove boxes, Positive pressure boxes and Automated Mono-Tubs (A fail compendium)

Re: Is my monotub set up good for BRF jar cakes [Re: Mr Piggy]

I’ve been consulting a professional mycologist who I have been emailing back-and-forth throughout my first couple of grow processes and this automated system that I created was her idea if I had the money for it. I just checked out my cakes as of today and all six of them literally overnight have started sprouting nice big fat baby mushrooms up and down every inch of all six cakes. I give them another three or four days if not less and I will have a massive amount of Albino P-Envy. So as long as it’s done sterile with distilled water in a machine that filters the water and the air that gets blown into the monotub. I’d say that this set up that she got me put together with has done wonderfully because I’ve seen some.Albino P-Envy grown on cakes like this before and they don’t grow a quarter as much as mine seemed to be growing right now. We’ll see how many of them turn out to be aborts. That I have to get rid of to allow the rest of everything to grow smoothly but as of right now, everything looks perfect and should be ready to harvest in just a few days.

I do agree that some people can get way overzealous and do way too much to begin with, but just pluginh in a automatic humidifier that will just randomly turns on whenever the perlite doesn’t keep the humidity up to optimal levels, which is maybe once a day for only about five minutes, it was a nice little addition and has kept the internal Claymate of my mono tub, perfectly consistent, which is why I think my cakes are producing a significant amount, more mushrooms than I expected. I’ll drop a few pictures in a few days when they’ve had some more time to mature.

I think it’s crazy when you see these guys doing these mono tub builds and they’ve got automatic humidifiers that branch off into four different mono tubs and each mono tub has three separate ways of telling the humidity and temperature inside of each individual tub along with computer fans that they have rigged up with air filters on both sides to turn on and off on a timer multiple times a day to get fresh filter air blow through each fruiting chamber. And then they have little cameras placed inside of each mono tub so they can monitor visual conditions from anywhere on the planet 24 hours a day. And they make sure that anything being used or that comes anywhere near any of the mono tubs has been soaked and then soaked a second time in 75% isopropyl alcohol and then on the third attempt, it has to be allowed to evaporate naturally are absurd. Mushrooms grow on cow shit. There’s nothing wrong with being careful during the inoculation process, but once whatever your inoculating has colonized, it’s usually pretty resistant to any type of contamination. As long as you’re halfway careful in what you’re doing you’re not gonna contaminate a fully colonized cake or grain bag after you get it out of its bag or out of its jar and put it into whatever you’re going to be using as a fruiting chamber. I mean, think about it. A large number of people will daily fan in air that hasn’t been filtered or anything else special done to it multiple times a day into the fruiting chamber while they’re colonized cakes or their bulk grow isn’t it fruitIng stage

If it works for you, go for it. Some may not need it and it may be overkill, but it's your project, and if it's working out, all the better.

Your title reads as 'is my setup good for BRF cakes'. Your responses received are that its overkill (cubes) -- Please stop and re-evaluate.

Let's illustrate those responses:

Only the stuff going on below the dotted line matters with cubes. How you get there is with:
A) Clean spawn +
B) A dialed field capacity substrate for your environment / fruiting chamber.

What is trying to be said is that no amount of modifications, foggers, blowers, holes, or opinions from mycologists will change the fact that starting with modified tubs (at least to the extent advertised here) will help you grow (cubes) bulk. They will however provide long-term net negative benefits including time, cost and molds.

This is not ment as discouragement for your current production or success but as a reminder that you should explore the sources provided and dig deeper as to why this is a bad plan (cubes).

Way to really make somebody feel like a piece of shit. And discount what I’ve said. And yes, this woman is one of the head mycologists at ***name removed. She started out, just giving me a couple of tips, but it appears she has taken a liking to me and has wanted to see my first few grows do well. This isnt a picture of the albino P- Envy but it is a picture of the very first cake that she helped me grow with the same set up

I only had one cake growing in the 12 x 12 x 12 mono tub with the automatic fogger hooked up to it and things grew really well. I believe this was a strain called B+. I’m still letting it dry so I haven’t tried them yet. But this is what my first cake looked like three days after I soaked it and put it inside the mono tub and kept it at the degree and level of humidity that she suggested. I’d say her suggestions work.

I didn’t find you guys until long after I had started my projects and I would say her 30 years of working as a mycologist and becoming ahead, psychologist at a place like ***name removed might be someone that I don’t mind taking advice from and maybe she’s just like you guys and gets excited about seeing people succeed and helping others. The whole point of this thread and many of the other threads on this website is because people enjoy sharing their knowledge and it’s exciting for them to see that the knowledge that they have given you has worked. I didn’t do anything crazy except for ad a automatic humidifier to the mono tub kit that was sent to me as well as a heating pad that the website that sold me, the kit suggested buying I just found a nicer one and bought and used that one instead of the one that the website was trying to sell me. Other than that, the mono tub has been left to do exactly what was described and told to do with from their videos and from the written directions that I received. I simply have been talking to the psychologist who I might get a response back from once or twice a week. It’s not as if me and her are sending emails back-and-forth every day all day. I get a tip from her every once in a while when I send her pictures of what’s going on and if she has any suggestions. And then someone like you comes along and decides to bash me and make me feel like everything I’ve been doing was stupid and wrong despite having an extremely successful first cake that I got tips from her on growing that had three successful flushes. And now I’m on my second girl where I have six cakes growing in the chamber that are all now starting to fruit

She also taught me about kits where you can buy and increase the amount of culture that you get if you use very sterile conditions to inoculate a jar that you can buy from certain companies and turn 10 cc into a couple hundred cc of liquid culture which as of right now, I am on day four of inoculating one of those jars and I’m seeing great growth in without any contamination. She gave me tips on how to get my BRF jars to colonize faster which my new set of jars that are colonizing right now are colonizing about three times faster than my first couple sets that I didn’t get any advice from her from. So how about instead of intentionally trying to make someone feel like crap just give a helpful tip instead of a sarcastic remark intended to make someone feel like they’re an idiot

Cakes in takeout containers. Room Temperature 14-20 Celsius, no idea of the tub humidity, misted maybe once a day. I made the syringe from a print labeled Alacabenzi.
I am not a mycologist. I grow a lot of cakes.

I’ve also grown hundreds of cakes.. literally hundreds. Here’s 48 of them double stacked in monotubs

Ya just don’t need the humidifier for tub growing.  99% of the time they’ll disrupt the micro climate produced by the cakes themselves and end up doing more harm than good.

We’re a bit skeptical of ppl claiming “mycologist” whatever.. they’re talking to one or they are one etc.  it happens a lot here.  Then they end up giving bad advice or discredit things we’ve spent years working on or whatever the situation might be, so we’re a little jumpy at the word.

I’ve edited your posts to remove where that person is from.  Most vendors (site or otherwise) aren’t going to want to know ppl that work for them are giving out growing advice to someone growing actives.  So let’s keep too much info out that kind discussion please, ty

There is a difference from sharing how you grow vs how to optimally grow.

You think Mr Piggy has'nt whipped my ass a few times already? Difference is, I appreciated it. I dug in. Thought it was fucking hilarious, I learned something.

These are not just some scrubs with a few grows. I am one of you ChicagoShroomer, we suck ass at growing and have zero long-term experience. You need to be ok with that and willing to accept what people are telling you isn't bullshit. They are trying to help you. I'm trying to help you. Everyone is trying to help you. It's OK to suck ass, thats how we learn and grow brother.

I’m mediocre at growing at best, but I know a thing or two after a decade+ of cult.

I know cultivators are not mycologists.  I know mycologists don’t have the time to take on a random cake grower since they are usually very busy doing things that are not cultivation related.  I also know to listen to people with more experience than me instead of throwing a word salad tantrum.

Faht is basically our cake expert here.  He has grown more cakes than probably any other member.  When he tells you a plastic ziplock bag works, then shows you a picture of a cake bristling with cubes, maybe listen.

What you did was ask for advice, then state that you already know what’s better and acted like the advice you got was an attack.

Don’t worry though, post through it.  It’s very convincing.
