Casing mixture questions
    #2929561 - 07/26/04 05:48 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I have a few basic type casing layer questions:

1. Does anyone have any personal accounts of the results of using
only vermiculite as the casing layer.

2. In the mushroom cultivator it says rye grain can be used as a casing layer. Has anyone tried this and/or what about a sterilized grain/vermiculite 50/50

3. "Supplementation at Casing" is talked about in The Mushroom cultivator and mentions adding soy bean meal, cottonseed meal, and or ground rye, wheat or kafir corn grains. Any of these supplements are to be added at %10 of the dry weight of the substrate. It says that 1/2- 2 lb pr sq. foot. yield increase is possible. Has anyone tried this?

Last but not least there are so many different casing mixtures and I would really like to hear anyones opinion on what has providied the best yield and is easiet to use. They all seem good but some seem to lack nutritive properties (i.e. plain vermiculite in the shroom god tek)
Thanks

100% verm microwaved for a few minutes has done wonders for me.  remember to patch to promote an even pinset   the casing layer's prime use is to keep moisture in and add protection.

If you're burning it in the micro, use the oven, 275 for 1.5 hrs covered tightly with foil. Str8 verm works fine, it's so simple. You may want to overmoisten it a bit as there will be some liquid loss in the oven due to evaporation.

This guy I know had 4 casings next to eachother, two straight verm and two verm/coir. The verm/coir colonized way faster and gave a much better pinset. All of them were carefully patched and conditions were maintained equally.

There might be other variables involved, but from his experience the verm/coir mixture works real well. It seems like straight verm would provide a slightly better contam barrier maybe?
