The ks swab is actually showing a lot of flat and barely visible myc but it had taken off in almost every plate

The mazatepec plates showing some purdy mycelium but I hate the crap the solution has left behind


Even managed to pluck some from around a redspore plate.

Lil update. The x7x+ is taking off with one plate looking great with a very light, spiral on one germ plate. The other is surrounded by bacteria, but at least I can clearly see it popping up.


The ks3 transfers are recovering nicely already too. Should be looking great in another couple days.

The thread tweezing/plucking is the way to go with the swabs 👍 good call 3am

Try letting that bacterial plate sit on its side. Bacteria cannot climb a vertical surface, but mushroom myc can. Sometimes the myc can reach far enough away from the bacteria pool to grab a bit easily. Even if you can't save it in one transfer, leaving it on its side right after the next transfer could get you something clean on the one after that.


I have saved some pretty rough cultures that way.

The second x7x+ plate doesn't look good to me. Is that water agar? If not, I don't think that is mushroom myc. x7x+ is usually very thick and aggressive. I have never seen it look faint like that.

Sorry for the late response here,

That is pda. I agree lol, that was definitely not cube myc. But I will most likely just move forward with the Mexicana, mazatepec and ks3. The maz and the ks3 are showing some sectoring some I'm quite happy. I have multi spore plates and clones of a stone on plates as far as the ps Mexicana go.

I'll post some pics here shortly.

Btw I like the tilted plate trick, that's clever.
I might try and salvage the x7x plates by doing a biopsy poke to some pucks, maybe not. They look pretty bacterial.

My first round of x7x+plates were that amazing greenish yellow bacteria that looks like lightning bug smeared on the plate.  Going back for more and hoping for a more workable result!  I don't even think there is any mycelium.  I was using a sterile swab too.  Wondering if I might be better off just going from scalpel to distilled water to plate.

I use to run biopsy pucks, they work. Im probably just going to drop them. I just picked up some king oysters for clones. I want to focus on a few things at once for now

The ks3 is already showing some dope sectoring. Some plates showing a buzzsaw formation.


Wish I could take some better pics with the phone. I'll break out my Nikon for some better shots soon.

Just a little peek at the ks3 trays before I cased them with 50/50 verm cactus soil and Lime

Ill let them grab the casing first before I put them in the GH. The substrate had me worried at first because the coir has a little chicken manure in the ingredient list. I went ahead and pasteurized it to be safe and looks like they ripped right through it.

I cased the Mexicana wbs a few days ago, everything should be on time to run together in the GH.

Do you guys have a preferred method of working with swabs? I've seen a few varying methods around here. Some seem to differ if your using a SAB or FL.

My preference currently:
  • Pre-open the swab pack in the SAB and set on rack next to receiving agar plate
  • Not yet exposing the swab, just making sure its easily adjustable with one hand
  • flame sterilizing my small field surgical scissors
  • with my left hand / thumb poking the swab out of the package
  • while with the same hand clam-shelling the receiving plate
  • finally with my right hand cutting of a small amount of swab fibers onto the plate


This seems to create less air movement in the SAB then say using a scalpel to scrape some fibers.

Just an example of how I hold the swab (swab is in the package when in the SAB and poking out slightly when doing transfers):

Im just going to use a scalpel now and treat it like a wedge transfer. Just flame your scalpel and cool it in the center of your plate, then use the tip of the blade to pick a few strands off the swab. Then place the tip of the scalpel with the fibers on it in the slot where you cooled your blade. I did this and every plate germed great. Wish I had a few of those swabs back that I just streaked on the plate.

Never undersell the power of water agar after germination to give the mycelium a chance to outrun the nasties. Look for a link in my sig on info on how to get clean plates.

Both x7x+ and KSSS have been vigorous and fast. I normally use 1.6% - 1.8% LME.

Vigorous indeed. The x7x is actually starting to pin on agar so I'll definitely be nabbing those pins. Aswell as the ks3 and mazatepec. I always let a few plates sit around for pin transfers.

Got a sick pin set coming in in one of the uncased trays but it's hard to see on cam rn. Very excited to see the ks3 come through. I'll be transferring some agar pins of ks3, mazatepec and +x+ or whatever it's called lol soon too.



Had the GH unzipped to dry the surface a bit, I dialed back the fog frequency now that I have some pins coming in.
