my baby might be sick...
    #2915257 - 07/22/04 09:04 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

My largest and most favorite peyote cactus has been getting discoloured spots on its skin which i am hoping will not spread across the entire plant. I first noticed it about a week ago and so far it has not gotten any worse but it looks like other buttons might be getting infected but I cant really tell. Take a look at the pics and tell me if you recognize whats going on here, I would like to know if this is a disease that will spread and kill my plant or if it is just discolouration due to something else. The reason im asking is that I have heard of an reddish peyote rot that is usually always fatal to the plant, I am just hoping it doesnt have that

ps. the plant is as dry as a bone so overwatering is not the problem

It needs a bigger pot. Put a bit of lime and lots of sand in the new soil mixture. Give the peyote some cactus fertilizer, dappled sun, and some wind block. That should do it. Pretty plant.

I've found the following soil combo one of the best for Lopho species:

1 part potting soil
1 part sand
1 part small lime chips
1 part aeration material

I also add a small amount of crushed lime into the mix.

Hope this helps
