dead mycelium?(pics)
    #2912255 - 07/21/04 12:29 PM (19 years, 8 months ago)

my casings have been open and in thier fruiting chamber for
4 and a half days now with light mistings, ambient sunlight, and consistent fanning. the growth no longer looks rhizomorphic but
thin and kinda greyish. it lightly covers the top of most of my casing, and its not a contamn. its very thin, not dense and kinda greyish. i think it might be stroma or weak myc. i heard stroma is bright white in color. is this weak mycelium? if it is weak or mycelium what can i do? how long until i should expect pins? i need them to pin before at least friday cus i am going out of town on sunday. have already cold shocked 2 times.

From your description, it should pin any day now, but could take another week or so. The shrooms never seem to care about our vacations. Bastards.

That sounds like cob web bro, sorry to have to say that. Take some pics if you can, but from your description you're most likely out of luck. If we can confirm that it's really cob web you should try cutting out the area that looks like that and spraying it with a mix of water and hydrogen peroxide. You can battle the contam that way.

i know for sure its not cobweb. cobweb is a rapid growth that is all fuzzy and rises above the casing layer, this stuff isnt like that at all. the myc just went from rhizomorphic and fluffy to gray and dull in some parts. i think its just about to start getting primordia n stuff. im not sure cus im not an expert grower. and if it were cobweb would it be dead a long time ago cus ive been misting for at least 4 days with h202.

There was a recent post that talked about raising and lowering temperatures to mimic the natures way of getting mycelium to pin. You might want to look into this instead of just cold shoking. Seems to have gotten better results more consistently
on how long it takes to get pinning.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1 this one says temp drop isn't that important for cubensis.

I'd drop the temp. They will still fruit but I've seen it take way longer.

What is your substrate? It almost looks like it is not entirely colonised.

You said it has been cold shocked twice. How? Was it dunked while it was coldshocked?

Don't drop the temp. Just keep the humidity as high as possible, and keep the air exchanges to a maximum. Try not to sacrifice the former for the sake of the latter.

You still may not get pins by friday, but I think another cold shock will only prolong pinning more...

the substrate is popcorn cased straight coir. it wasnt a cold "shock" more like a 5 degree or 10 degree drop in temp from ice bags in the terrarium underneath the casing pans.

My buddy's got an identical situation going on...casings look very similar to yours as far as colonization goes. His coir is a whole lot darker though. Maybe it's just the photos?

Magash is right about everything though, so it's  just going to take longer

ok everything seems to be fine, the greyer areas of mycellium are being overrun by little white balls, which are TINY. im guessing these are hyphae or primordia. what do you do after you see these tiny white balls? lower humidity. stop misting?

Keep humidity and air exchanges to a maximum! After the hyphal knots become pins and the caps begin to change color a bit, you should lower humidity a bit but keep the air exchanges up. If you keep the humidity too high throughout, you will probably end up with more aborts and an uneven flush...

---
edit - If you mist, try not to do it directly on the casing.

Hey ShroomDoom good news it does look like myc and not cobweb. Also it looks very dry and this will directly affect the type of myc growth making it weak. What type of casing is on your casing? looks like maybe straight coir (not good) anyway:Getting the most out of your casings! A pinning strategy. it may help and you'll need to register i'm thinkin. lots of great pics and should answer all your questions nicely
