Ideal Tub FAE for Dollarama 15/20L $4 tubs

Heyo, so for the Canadians out there, the Dollarama plastic containers are the best deal in terms of tubs. I have used these successfully for years, BUT, I still used my old methods for preparing the holes, which perhaps are not ideal.

These are the ones btw. . Actually, the ones I have are Galliware brand and they are 20L, but they are not on the Website.



Like, I have large circles cut out and I stuff them with polyfill or medical tape. Perhaps they are too big, I do get droplets on the sub, but perhaps they dry out a bit too much.

Note that I also do 500-600g of coir with 4 or 5 jars.

So, I was wondering, what are you doing with these tubs in terms of FAE? I can't be the only one using them.

Just flipping the lid? Drilling some small holes? Big holes with a 1in circle blade, how many, 2, 4?

Have you done higher as well? I've done regular monotubs,600g coir and 4 or 5 jars, it gets quite tall but I've still gotten 1oz per quart, which tbh has been my upper limit so far.

I wonder if since its a smaller tub, it is losing output to innefiency.

I do thinner ones as well if I have iffier spawn. I'll try doing a test soon with my next batch of HBP jars, one 5quart vs two 2.5quart

Yeah I've done up to 4 inches I'll try modify them this time maybe even a hole in the lid itself

I feel like I need to buy new ones, because these have been through some shit.

The first ones I tried drilling a circular hole into broke, so I used a heatgun to melt holes into it. Works really well for making holes, except it distorts the structural integrity and then the lids aren't perfectly fitting anymore. Those holes also probably provide too much FAE.

I guess a good test would be:

1x Completely Unmodified
1x Flipped lid
1x One hole in the middle with medical tape/polyfill
1x with old school monotub holes
1x with 5 small drill holes on 2 sides, maybe 4

If you're drilling you should use a wooden plank to support as a backer to drill into.
It stops the plastic from flexing and makes it much safer and easier.

Bumping this because I am currently doing tests with unmodified tubs of the variety that I had, the cheap Dollarama ones.

The droplets on the mycelium seem to indicate dialed in conditions, but let's see how it flushes.







Here's Albino Country Cock in an unmodified tub. For 2qts, it yielded 711g wet which is quite nice for me. So a success story. That being said, here is another tub, not the same model, that has holes, and you can see it got a better canopy. I will find out about yield tomorrow, although it is 3qts of spawn as well.





I did do two more tubs of ACC, one in an unmodified and one in one of my older ones, so that will be better data in a week or so.

But, I guess I am asking, those first pics all look happy right?
