And it's way more complicated than that example. I am an American manufacturer, all my tooling is bought from countries that now have tariffs because it is not made in countries without tariffs. My tooling just got more expensive which means I have to raise my prices. I don't suddenly just get to outcompete imported goods since my operating costs have gone up. Yet, I don't really see any benefit from the increased tax revenue. In fact, nobody seems to know where that money is being spent. On top of that, the increased price of my goods means I am no longer competitive internationally when I held an advantage before. This a real story from my machine shop.

Goods go to customs.  Customs charges a fee. If that fee isn't paid, the goods don't come in.  It's not complicated. You do know that all shipments from foreign countries go through customs, right?

I saw a short of a guy who makes little copper widgets.  I dunno, maybe welder tips or something.  Anyway, he was explaining that even though almost the whole process is automated and he can crank out insane numbers of the widgets he can't be competitive on price because finished widgets from China are offered for less than his cost for the copper stock bits that his machines turn into widgets

Well I see the frustration the tax revenue point is a separate issue, in theory we should see benefit to the tax revenue, the fact we don't should be a riot point, like France does supposedly, they riot for everything I heard

But I choose to believe a tarrif is this

An American steel girder cost $10

A Chinese steel girder cost $5

If there's a 100% terrif on Chinese girders

I buy girder from China, I pay China $5 and uncle sam $5

So I might as well buy the amareican girder for $10 and support my compatriot


This is exactly how tariffs work. At no point would China or Chinese companies pay anything. Tariffs increase the cost of imported goods. There is a reason we don’t employ them anymore as a general source of government revenue: 1. they are highly inflationary by increasing costs to manufacturers and consumer, and eliminating the downward price pressure from cheap foreign sources and they do not provide a stable source of income.
