Does anybody here grow their own tobacco?

Prices for tobacco are getting insane, tobacco is full of chemicals and is cured in ways that promote formation of carcinogens..

In the spirit of Homegrown = Well Grown, is anybody growing their own tobacco and maybe doing more niche things like making their own snuff and dip or rolling their own cigars?

Straight from war torn Ukraine, in support of the people there, Ukranian Makhorka, a variety of Nicotiana rustica selected for high nicotine, harsh growing conditions and short growing seasons.

As N.rustica's go, this is like a superstrain.

Makhorka was the early Soviet Union's "peoples tobacco", a major crop in its days.

Rustica is a sturdy strain. I don't know much but I gave a friend seeds for N. rustica and he gre them in northwest Washington no problem. Curing is indeed the tricky part. Morbidoctor, rest his soul in peace, swore that window fermentation was the best way to go. Use good soil, clean water and you will get something good 👍

I have been thinking about it.

I found a great seed vendor that sells many types of tobacco seeds and am quite tempted to grow a few types.

Some of the weaker US native species are particularly interesting to me.

I'm a new tobacco grower. I have some indoors ready to transplant into new pots soon. It's not rustica. I have tabacum and alata (Jasmine tobacco)

My Makhorka (nicotiana rustica) came up today, less than a week after I've sown it.

I'm starting them in 100% applesauce (ground apples w/o additives) cups and will transfer them to 2liter pots.




they look so precious and delicate.

in 60-90 days they will be all done.

Is it legal to grow tobacco in america? In australia smokes are heavily taxed, 45$ a pack of 20... just criminal. Also i think its a 30,000$ fine if you have a plant.

Yes, Tobacco is legal to grow in the US.

However sales and transportation are heavily regulated by the ATF.

This is their page where they cover the basics of the laws:

Essentially, if you have, make and or transport 10,000+ cigarettes, you need to follow some strict laws about records and stuff. It's all about taxation.

It's legal to grow and use, for the most part, but it's rare for those who use it heavily to actually grow it, at least in the US.

Using jars to cure. My only real option. There is some information online about doing that. Will post when I do it. Not sure how much I will grow as it will be grown indoors by a tall window. It is bright and my houseplants do well there.

I know tobacco always has TMV or whatever and can give it other plants. I've had it on cannabis before. No longer growing weed but may get it on my houseplants.

22 august, my Makhorka (Mapacho, Rapé, Nicotiana rustica) is properly cabbaging out, good leaf formation, shining with nicotine and related alkaloids. Leaves look absolutely beautiful and are no doubt K.O. powerful so entirely unusable for smoking

Will I be able to harvest seeds this year?
