Germinating Salvia Recognita in Zone 8

Hi everyone, I have recently obtained some s. recognita seeds and have read quite a few mixed reports on the best way to germinate them. Some say that they're very difficult to germinate and have only had success with techniques like cold stratification or even germinating in the fridge and some say that you just stick them in the ground and they grow.

Has anyone living in a hardiness zone 8 area had success with these and how did you do it? The seeds are cheap so I don't mind wasting some on experimentation but I'd like to go into growing them armed with some sort of knowledge.

Does it have salvinorin A? I thought only divinorum does.

There is a research paper that claims that salvinorin is also found in S. recognita and S. glutinosa, but the consensus is that the finding has not been replicated yet.  I'm also in a similar zone and am having trouble germinating the seeds.  I don't have any more so it will likely be a wash for me since they're not that common.

A single seed ended up germinating after over 2 weeks.  The medium I used was coco coir with the seeds placed on top (not buried), followed by sprinkling vermiculite on top of the seeds. 

Verm is transparent even if it doesn't look like it to us so it's able to both let light through and also retain moisture.

The seedling doesn't look very strong and I don't expect any others to pop.

what zone is s. recognita from natively?

maybe its soil/fertilizer related.

It's native to Turkey.

Maybe it's shepherd/sheep/sheep dog related. What else grows endemically.
