How many inches high should bulk substrate be when growing?

Doing my first grow soon and I am wondering how many inches high in the thb should the bulk substrate be? I have a couple 30 quart tubs and a few 6 quart ones. And i also don't know which ones to use..

I have never grown in large tubs, but I am well versed with the 6 quart shoeboxes.



I fill my 6 quart shoeboxes about halfway, as you can see in this pic. You could go deeper if you wanted, but this works great for me.

I'm guessing you are using coconut coir, like most people. The most important things for your substrate are 1) sterility and 2) hydration.

You want your coir to be at field capacity (fully saturated), without being soaking wet. You should be able to pick up a handful of hydrated coir, squeeze it, and only a few drops come out. It may take you some time to figure out the ideal ratio of coir to water.

I was following someone else's coir recipe for a while and my substrate was too dry. It depends on the brand of coir. I use Eco Earth coco coir. I buy the bag of loose coir rather than the brick, because it's easier to weigh out small amounts. I hydrate my coir with a 1:2 ratio of dry coir (grams) to water (grams or mL).

For one 6 quart shoebox, I use approximately 120 grams of dry coir and 240 grams water, plus one full jar of grain spawn. There are plenty of coir prep teks on here, but basically I weigh out my coir and dump it into a stainless steel cooking pot. I measure out the water and pour it into my kettle, boil it, then dump it on top of the coir. I give it a quick stir with a silicone spatula, then cover the pot with the lid and let it sit for several hours until it's room temperature.

I have started spawning at 3:1 in shoeboxes with a little more to cover the grains. Usually brings me close to the lip on inside of purple handled shoeboxes. I would spawn deeper in a larger monotub though.
