Stoned Meditation
    #2846468 - 07/01/04 07:33 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

What are the pros and cons of meditating when you're stoned? Are there any advantages, or does it actually make meditation harder?

I find it makes it a lot harder. The inner voice is much harder to quiet when I'm stoned. This is just my personal experience, it's likely a subjective thing.

with a gentle approach it is good, and it can be a refuge.

the new habits to practice should be laid in Un-Stoned, so that they will function best when you are away from any stoner sources.

I do it sometimes sober, sometimes stoned (once in a while).

Doing it stoned gets me more spectacular 'effects', it can be very intense, but it has some kind of artificial flavor to it. Also, I feel better the next day (I usually do it just before going to sleep) after sober meditation than after stoned meditation.
Sober is more uneventful but seems to have more lasting effects.

This is a common mistake... I used to have a lot of trouble with it as well. To get around it, don't scold yourself for thinking... it happens to all of us, even the monks that do this everyday, all day, for years and years... instead of yelling at yourself when you notice yourself thinking, simply stop thinking and go back to no-thought again.

With what I said above, my thought process is like "oops, I'm thinking..... ack, I'm thinking.... .... .... doh, I'm thinking... ... ... ... ... ... whoa, that was cool, oops... ..."

Sometimes I'll start drifting into what I think is working, but then I realize that I just thought it was working.. then I realize I can still hear myself "talking" in my head, just more quietly and in the background.

Exactly, Seuss. One of the points of meditation is to learn about your thought process...not to force silence upon your thoughts. Watch in silence, and try to pay attention to just WHAT pops into your head during your meditation. Make note of it and simply fall back into silence. With this you stand to learn a great deal about your inner voice

Describe meditation. My meditation and your meditation are two different things. Having done TM for 25 years I can also do it stoned as well, though I have given up weed. I have also done my meditation on every other drug, including when jonesing on crack back when I was a crack addict. TM is very simple and automatic and works always...for me any way.

For others, you must explain to me what meditation you are doing and what its purpose is to you before I will be able to provide some additional insight.

I do the breath-counting exercise, and I meditate because i find it to be a spiritually enriching experience.
Now please, give us some of your insights! I'm sure you have plenty of intereting observations on drugged meditation. Care to share?

If used correctly, marijauna is a self-discovery tool.

Unlike LSD, or Shrooms....marijauna will never really give you clear insight into the world around you, but it WILL give you clear insight into the nature of your physical body, if you pay attention.

It can also be used to pay attention to the emotional body as well.

I use LSD and Mushrooms as tools to face my fears, give clear insight into the world I'm living in, and sometimes I get prophecies too.

Marijauna is used by me to put me in a trance like state, in which I can pay attention to my body like I usually don't.

getting stoned just makes my mind restless most of the time....i think it depends on the kind of bud though...
anyway, i think that a good way to get started meditating is to sit quietly and see what your next thought will be, and just watch your mind from your natural state and not struggle with it.

I've been meditating for a while now, but havent been smoking much. Yet in the past few weeks I roasted twice, and both times I meditated. I'm at a point where I can calm my thoughts while high and like Aldous said, the experience was much more intense and gave me more of an "enlightened" or "realized" feeling... of course after coming down and meditating again, I realized it was just the drugs talkin' (if you catch my drift). Also, I got a headache afterwards, both times. A while ago, when I didn't meditate so often and I smoked a lot of mids it was just exasperating to try and meditate when stoned (too many thoughts). I think it's better for me to just not smoke at all. Ironically, the reason I used to love pot is because of the way it made me think and now that's why I don't like it.
