Who invented sour mash?

I always thought it was Dr. Crow who invented the sour mash process in 1835, but I was playing around on the Jim Beam website and it says:

It says otherwise on the back of my bottle of Old Crow, and all the places I've seen on the net (for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourbon_whiskey ) say that Dr. Crow invented it in 1835.

....  So was Old Crow or Jim Beam the first sour mash?  Thank you -- this is very important to me :wink:

I've always heard it was Jim Beam.

I just asked my surrounding coworkers ,"Who invented sour mash?" and the unanimous response was Jim Beam.

I think that jim bean is BS. Its like every beer company says they are the first in the nation. I dont know, I think its all hootinanay! Cuz my great great great grand pappy made it damn it.

heeheeheeee....  Yeah, I guess -- sort of....  No, really -- I like it better than Beam and it's a lot cheaper -- $8.99 a liter.  I like Wild Turkey A LOT better that Old Crow, but have no desire to pay $21.99 for a 750mL

Thanks for the info -- I'm talking about sour mash, though -- not bourbon, itself.  On your last link, though (a lot of info -- thanks) it says at the bottom:

Those sites claimed all USA bourbons are sour mash, that is why I posted them.. Oopps  :confused:

As of now, they are, but they haven't always been. The method is a cheap and effective way to prevent bacterial contamination, so it was pretty much adopted by everyone at some point in time.

Has any one drank MAkers MArk or Knob Creek before. I think those two are some of the best. Not sure if they are sour mash though.
