Continual heating and cooling might cause condensation inside the jars, this would be bad.

Here is a link to a very well put together incubatior.

Yeah puscle the towel is a good idea, the old setup is pure dry heat (electric coils + fan). I think I will towel + setup that Humidity linked to (aquarium heater in a jar of water, jug placed inside incubator).. Actually I might not even need the towel because the evaporation from the fish heater will up the humidity a bit.

just figured i'd mention the thermometer setup is a indoor/outdoor digital by Springfield (under $20 at WalMart) with high/low memory (very useful for detecting spikes/drops in temp). The outdoor sensor is just taped onto a jar and trailed out of the incu. to the main unit. I find this to be quite accurate.

oh 1 more thing I forgot to ask earlier, the jars will be sealed in a plastic containter, how often will I need to open/fan for proper gas exchange?

Dry/wet heat doesn't matter if you're just colonizing sealed jars. I use a large heating pad on "LOW" underneath a large cardboard box w/ lift off lid [copier paper box]. This keeps it in the high 80's if run 24/7. Heating pads are much safer than any space heater, and there's zero noise.

I also use one of the indoor/outdoor therms, very handy, $16.95 at Wally-Mart. The remote sensor is placed under one of the jars inside the box to get a better idea of the real temp of the jars. Air temp reading inside the box is usually 5 deg cooler.

puscle: are you saying you use a soaked towel as well as a heating pad?.. I think i'm having a bit of a problem with my jars drying out, could you please explain your tec so i can reverse this drying process as soon as possible. I'm using a heating pad, but I also have a fish tank heater.. although i'm not exactly sure how set up this type of incubator up.. do you put the fish tank heater right in the same water as the jars??.. i don't think this will work for me because it's like 8" long. My jars are at like 90%, but I can see the growth is really slowed down, any help would be appreciated!
