Heat sources?

I am looking for means of heating up a 115 Litre terrerium, I'm not too keen on the idea of using a jar of water and a light bulb. I've read that a fish tank heater works perfectly, but wonder if a fish tank heater in a jar, or other container with water would provide enough heat to warm the entire chamber. I've read the entire site four or five times over in my time, so I know what is here, and what isn't, information on heating simply isn't that widespread. Any ideas are greatly appriciated, as I've only got a few days until "D-day." Thank you.

A Heat rock works really well, as does the fish tank heater you spoke of.Also a heating pad, but dont run it all the time or you will cook the casing, or cakes. Welcome:)bluhoney

Woo hoo! I finally found some viable information on incubator/chamber heating setups with a fish tank heater! Looks like my job just got cut in half. http://www.mycotopia.net/teks/incubator.html THIS IS A MUST IF YOU NEED HELP WITH HEATING!

In reply to: "I've read the entire site four or five times over in my time, so I know what is here, and what isn't, information on heating simply isn't that widespread. " Something smells funny. If you really read this entire site four or five times and still don't know how to build an incubator, you're in for a hell of a time. Funny how you answered your own question by advertising another website. Live and learn I guess. Free Spore Ring

Indeed, I have read the site MANY times, however I have not ever been interested in an incubator. I am not interested in an incubator, so I did not look for information on them. I was looking for heating methods, and the plans for that incubator so happened to be applicable to a terrerium. And yes, you are living, and perhaps you have likewise learned not to assume you know exactly what one is thinking, so please, spare me your arrogant replies, but thanks for the reply nonetheless.

Now that I have concluded I need this equipment, and have bought it, I have a question or two. If placed inside of a large jar of water, in the middle of a terrerium, will it produce enough heat to warm the entire terrerium, or only the area in which it is placed? Should I use a water/hydrogen peroxide solution, or just water? And finally, will an open jar increase the humidity inside of the chamber greatly? Thank you for any replies containing useful information.

Leave air gaps for the heat to circulate around. If you have room you might consider a gallon tea picher or something large. Put just a little h2o2 in. Seal the top off with aluminum foil so the water won't evaporate away and bust your heater. Sorry if I assumed incorrectly but someone posts these directions about once a week. We've been battling the cold all winter. Hope that helps. Free Spore Ring

Thank you. I have my heater in a gallon glass jar, which will sit in a 115 liter terrerium, so I have plenty of space for anything.

Its pointless to add peroxide to your water.....with the water being heated the peroxide will break down in a matter of hours, maybe less......Just put sterile water in the jar and cover it to keep spores and what not from falling into it. Use aluminum foil to cover it. Also for a good radiant heat way of warming up your system you can set up a seperate tank(rubbermaid container, whatever) with water, a fish tank heater, and a water pump.....just run the water pump through tubes into your terrarium then back into the other container.........this way you get heat on all sides of the terr instead of the immediate area of the heater.........just a suggestion, maybe you could implement it in the future.
