1. is there a brand i should not use?

2.Wash and soak like the other Whole grains? or do i do some thing differnt?

If you've never done a millet based bird seed it might be a good idea to skip the simmering part and not risk over-heating the substrate. If it is not simmered correctly, the protein within the seeds begin to emulsify within the shell causing the release of contam prone starches. When cooled, these starches solidify and become a huge dent in your production. Now, I'm not dissagreeing with it.  if used correctly, simmering the birdseed  is an effective way of promoting a sterile substrate. But thats only if you can cook!  :yesnod:

I really dont' think simmering has anything to do with sterilization but instead softening up the seed to absorb more water....the pc takes care of all the sterilization

all I ever do is ratio....load 350ml millet/200ml water per 1lt jar and pc...never once had a contam before innoculating and I've left my jars for weeks before(and they still work fine btw) doc24 mentioned something about fungicides and thats why rinsing is done but the grain I use works perfectly without rinsing

I use 100% pure WHite Millet the same way.
When you simmer on medium/low heat for 30 minutes,it puts just the perfect amount of water into the WBS

I disagree with that!Even if it did "release of contam prone starches" they would be killed when you pc'd them.

Simmering the WBS has nothing to do with"promoting a sterile substrate "---it is done to add  the water content to your WBS.

Soaking the WBS overnight is done to germinate the endospores so when you pc,it will kill them.


step 1=soaking overnight
  to allow the endospores to germinate(some are able to live through the pc in their dormant state,so we allow them to germinate first,then pc and kill the little bastards.
step 2=rinse to remove any unwanted additives(fungicides,etc)
step 3=simmering is done only to add water content
step 4=pc to sterilize and kill the already germinated endospores.

i gotta a question now.... is that wbs shown in the right have sunflower seeds in it? I filled 12 jars wil wbs containing those big black suckers among the millet and stuff, but i now hear i should have removed them or something?

When you use 100% white millet, and after you simmer, you load your jars without draining? so when you load them there are water spots on the seeds that are against the inside of the jar? im curious to this because i have only used wild bird seed but want to try pure white millet, and also Doc, how much honey/karo syrup per jar do you use? Thanks

Doc's 12 steps

1->rinse
2->soak overnight
3->rinse
4->simmer on medium/low heat for 20-30 minutes
5->rinse while still hot
6->drain for 20-30 minutes
7->load into jars
8->pc at 15 psi for 60-90 minutes
9->when the pressure has dropped enough to open pc,I then take out jars and give each one a good shake
10->let cool overnight
11->innoculate each jar with 2cc's of karo/honey water & shake to distribute the mycelium
12->wait 4-5 day's and shake again
4-5 day's later they are ready to do what ever it is you want to do with them they should be done!

All of the above were done with pint jars-if quarts are used it will take a few days longer.

It's normal,simmering puts just the right amount of water into the wbs-no measureing,no guessing,nothing but simmer and load!
If done properly,no dry jars, no wet jars,no stalled jars,just explosive growth and complete colonization within 2 weeks,IF DONE PROPERLY.

Since I have doing this,I have had ZERO contams & zero problems!

karo/honey tek VVVV

1->put 100ml water into jar
2->add 1 teaspoon of karo(light)corn syrup or organic honey(2 teaspoons if you plan on keeping it for a long period of time
3->prepare jar for pc'ing
4->pc at 15 psi for 15-20 minutes
5-> remove and let cool overnight
6->innoculate jar with spore syringe(one drop from your syringe is all it takes,but,I add 1-2 cc's to make myself comfortable about it.
7->wait untill you see enough mycelium(Quarter size)or more
8->prepare a clean syringe
9->insert syringe and suck up about 1/2 of the mycelium(the more you use,the faster the jars will colonise)
10->you now have a syringe that is capable of innoculating more jars than you need(remember it only takes a drop),lol,plus you have karo/honey mycelium too that will continue to grow.


Storage-in your fridge!I put mine in the door and when the door gets opened it gives it a little shake to aggitate it.

You have an endless supply of liquid innoculant.


If you use liquid mycelium,you don't have to wait for the spores to germinate(they already have in the karo/honey)thus it cuts off usually 1-2 weeks off of your colonization times.
It is not necessary,but it does make a BIG difference in time,plus you are giving them a nute boost!

Whoa! thats a lotta coverage! I just do lid, Tyvek filter, outer ring, and thats it. Should i be covering with 4 Additional layers of protection? Maybe i could understand 1 layer of foil to keep water off the top if for some reason thats bad during pc... but ... dayum!

Tyvek -used to retain moisture inside the jar while allowing for air exchange,

Polyfill -used for air exchange and My innoculation route

coffee filters -used to cover lid after innoculation,just in case contams get in through the hole the needle made

foil -used to keep the polyfill from getting soaked during pc'ing,it is removed(sometimes)after innoculation

Ok,I do all of my work in a non-sterile environement.I use no chemical cleaners-just dish detergent.I have 4 dogs and 5 birds in my house and I can't be spraying bleach or lysol around.I would hate to lose a $3,000.00 African Grey parrot(18 yrs old),a baby African Grey-$1,000.00,a PlumbHead Parakeet-$350.00,a love bird $80.00,and a Blue & Gold Maccaw-$1,500.00,(the dogs I'm not that worried about)just because I sprayed something toxic to them.That is why I go all out with the Tyvek,PolyFill,foil,coffee filters.Also,I have been 100% successfull doing it this way and as of today,zero contaminated jars.

Two Question, 1. How long can a karo /honey jar which has colonized Mycelium in it Last in the fridge? Meaning, if i want to store it away to inocculate jars later on. I have honey jars at the moment.

2. What Temperature should they be stored at to Prevent the mycelium from using up its Nutrients, but Not kill the Mycelium itself?

3. What what Temperatures does Mycelium kick the bucket ( Cold?) , i know hot its around 95 to 100, 90 slows it down. So basically i'm looking for the slow down # for keeping it cool and just to be safe i'd like to know what kills it. Thanks!

killbill, I woudl use it asap but im sure it coudl chill for a month or more, as long as it dosent contam. Throw it in the fridge as doc said and dont worrya bou the nutrients in teh water, you just need growth hanging out not a feeding frenzy. Just dont freeze the myc and it will live.

you dont need pure white millit, WBS works just as well.
