Bird seeds or Cracked Corn?
    #4712728 - 09/26/05 03:06 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Even tho Cracked corn sounds awesome, is there an overwhelming public choice between the two? I'm trying to decide which to use...any help much appreciated.

I've never used cracked corn but I have used corn meal and millet together in an experimental mix for oysters. It worked pretty good

The Bird seed will have more nutrients, if you are going to case the stuff that would be the way to go. If you are using for spawn, cracked corn is VERY cheap and a lot of people have good results with it.

I would go with WBS. It's not that much slower than Cracked Corn and has more nutrients and is easier to break apart when shaking the jars.

WBS all the way, no matter how much cheaper or not cracked corn is I can fill 12+ quart jars with WBS for like 2.5 bucks. More nutes if you are gonna case, easy to break apart if you are gonna spawn, and Doc's WBS Tek is just too easy to follow.

WBS is more forgiving - as to initial moisture content, IMHO.

Bird Basics from PetCo @ $8 per 40 lb bag.

Soak 24 hours - RINSE well & DRAIN well.

Jar up - as above.

PC 90 minutes.

Inoculate

Shake ONCE at around 15 to 20% colonization

Ready to use as SPAWN to H/Poo

WBS is alot better than cracked corn, IMO. Cracked corn has less nutrients and doesn't shake well at all.
Cracked corn isn't that great for use as spawn, unlike WBS, which is great.
Each of the grains in WBS(Millet,Milo,Wheat,Hulled Sunflower)become an inoculation point when used as spawn.
Cracked Corn is just a bunch of busted up Corn.
Which you don't want.
When I simmer my WBS, I don't want any exploded grains(5 % is okay).
But when I simmer Cracked Corn it is all exploded, lol, caused it is cracked to begin with, making a goey paste like mess.

But, that is from my own experience. I'm sure there are some people around that have had really great results with it. I'm just not one of those people.

Good luck if you use it and let us know how you do.

I'm doing Cracked corn for the first time right now. I think the sicky pasty problem comes from the free starch in the CC mix. Extra soaking and alot of rinsing seems to have aleviated this problem.
One jar i did as the CC tec sugests, was a little pasty, but the ones i did extra...EXTRA rise on seem great. been a few days .... lots of colinization, and they shake rather easy IMO.
BUt like every one says to each his own. I'll use CC more just because i have had bad luck with bacterial conamination with my last batch of WBS.
