Space Pod™ R2D2™ Dehydrator mod * 5

After a few trials I came up with this design for a bucket dehydrator based on altering the $45 Presto 06300 dehydrator. Fill up the bucket, it dries it evenly in 12ish hours. 2 pounds dry a day.

Pros:
Easy load unload.
Huge capacity
Feels low fire danger
Fast

Cons:
Costs a bit of money to make.
Takes time to build
I can't seem to find a high temp tape that will stick.



Starting with the 06300 dehydrator.... Its wonderful... 600watts, factory set thermostat set at 165f. Powerful fan. Its great.

I started with a simpler design: blowing hot air into the top of the bucket and out the bottom, but it was very slow drying the bottom. So I redesigned it to be similar to the initial design, where the heat comes in from the outside edge, comes to the center and either goes out the bottom or back up into the fan intake.

I start by gluing a tray to the bucket lip.



Then I cut out the center of the tray and I drill a 2" hole in the floor, and find a oil filling funnel and drill 1/4 holes in it, as well as holes in the bucket sides, focusing on the bottom. The floor can get wet so I made a raised floor with mesh and plumbers strap.



Wrap the bucket with reflective insulation foam, making sure it hovered off the bucket for air flowing exterior of the bucket. I also tilt the bucket so steam can escape and drilled a tiny water drain hole for condensation to leak out the bottom corner of the bucket floor.



Toss in some fruit (this was about 3/4's full and dried to 14oz. 12 hours.) (look for the steam)

I've only used this aluminum tape, it says its high temp... but it hates sticking to the reflective foam.
