active / passive pickups?

I've been looking online for a bit, and i think i've found a couple nice pickups, but they're active EMG pickups

As I understand, active pickups have preamps in them, and also take up more room than passive ones - i don't know if my current ones are passive or not - they're ibanez-included AH1 and AH2 humbuckers

How do I find out if they're compatible? Other info also appreciated

yeah active pickups require a 9 volt battery to work. They are amazingly good though. One day I'll probably have a guitar with just strictly EMG's.

yeah, my pickups are passive, what you just said filled in alot of space, along w/ a quick search on that forum..

I wonder how hard it is to install the actives? Elsewhere on the net, I found a site which said you'll probably have to cut a hole in your guitar to get actives up and running :o

the only thing you have to drill out is a place for the 9 volt battery. you cant match passive pickups with active ones because of the huge difference in impedense. does your axe have a pickguard? if so, you can route out a plce for the 9v battery there and cut a channel connecting it to the pickup cavity.

it has no pickguard

is there no way the 9 volt battery will fit inside? There seems to be enough room in there

you can try to fit it in the control cavity. just be sure to wrap it with some foam first or hold with a battery clip. the best solution would be to route in a battery box. like this one: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Components:_Battery_boxes_and_clips/Battery_Boxes.html

I play EMG actives.. an 81 and an 84.. I love 'em. I don't think I'll ever go back.

P.S. You don't happen to have an AX120 do you? Because the pickups you mentioned are the stock pickups for that model, which I also have. (But my active pickups are in a different guitar, so I can't help you much with trying to get them in it if that's what you've got)

nope,  its an ibanez but not ax120, its ar250

and aje:
i'm not in a band or anything, but i'm interested in playing some classical music on the guitar ( it just sounds so neat w/ tremolo picking :laugh: ) , along with heavy distortion metal and grunge, but i also want some deep bluesy-rock sound for stuff like Johnny B Goode.


Duno, maybe some passives would suit me better?

Passives may be better for grunge and bluesy rock.

The EMG's are great for heavy distortion metal.

That is simply based on how they are most often used though. Pick whichever sound you like, and incorporate that into your own unique playing style I suppose...
