How to preserve fungal genetics * 1

Tired of making slants just to need to redo them every year or so?

Here's a simple method I use for preserving my cultures. Small agar wedges suspended in distilled water. This is how we preserve our library here at Inoculatetheworld. I have three libraries in three different locations on three different electrical grids to ensure the longevity of these genetics. In addition to creating a purposeful business, we also are passionate about preserving these things forever. We picked up this technique in the Netherlands from the worlds largest DNA bank, and are confident these genetics can last hundreds of years in this state. One year in storage and there is zero change in the growth stage of the mycelium.

How do you get mycelium out of it ? Just suck some water with the syringe?

Or do you just get the agar-wedge our of it, so it's just for storage?

according to  Josex only the Mycelium is supposed to be  suspended in the water , no agar can be included.

-Easy storage. You can leave anywhere dark and undisturbed and they don't need refrigeration. (+1 phials)
-The tek is easy as hell. (+1 phials)
-The myc inside the phials can last in this dormant state for many years, allegedly without losing quality. (+1 phials).

I think slants win the contest, why the heck didn't I think of this before posting?  :randy:

Good resources.

A local AllMart has mini-refrigerators for drinks and stuff for under $50.

Perfect to store cultures.

So beginners know, just refrigerating sterile colonized substrate in a closed (but not totally sealed) container like a PF jar is not nearly as good as water storage, but it can also be used to preserve cultures for well over a year.

Cold storage is rather useful.
