i was reading on penn state mushroom spawn lab under Spawn. Spawning, and Spawn Growth that they keep growing their cultures out on new dishes every few weeks.. is this how all strain preservation is done? and test tube slants are just for backups, incase something goes wrong?

yes busy work for students? i will spend 2 days making grain spawn i willl make 50 quart jars or so and after thay are colonized i will store them in a mini fridge at 33~34F and thay last great for a 6+ months, for long term storage you can freeze spore prints for 20+ years also you can make slants and thay can keep if kept right for 10 ~ 15 years too
