Cobweb Mold Identification
    #27384447 -

ORIGINAL: 12/07/2021

Hey Everyone I'm seeking advice on my current monotubs. I'm frustrated and concerned that they may be contaminated with cobweb mold.

Here's 2 Pics of the tub from the 8th:

As you can see they are covered in a thin wispy layer of 'greyish' mycelium that I am concerned is cobweb mold.

There's a distinct colour difference between the wispy covering and the bright white 'balls' of mycelium seen underneath it, hence my concern.

Here's another picture of the same tub from the 12th:

From the research I've done into cobweb mold I realize that what I have in my tubs doesn't seem to be quite as 'tendril' like as some of the examples I've seen.

Nevertheless I want to stay on the skeptical side and defer to the community.

1. Is it cobweb mold?
2. If it isn't cobweb what is it? And is it a problem?
3. If this is a problem is there a way to fix it?

I'm quite paranoid about this as my only other tub was spawned from sister grains used to create this tub and I'd be demoralized to lose them.

The reason I mention the spawn is that when I created these tubs the WBS was very hard to break up which I have recently learned is likely a potential sign of contamination.

Please Help, your advisement is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: 18/07/2021

Hey Everyone, sorry for the delayed update, it kept raining here which kept me from being able to dig as I decided it would be best to "Jurassic Park" these tubs.

FYI if it hasn't been done yet I'd like to include into the compendium of mycology terminology the analogy of "Jurassic Parking" as a term meaning: to bury colonized substrate outside to see if "life finds a way." :laugh:

As promised here are what are hopefully pictures with better lighting (I took them outside on the 17th). This is Tub #1 that was shown previously:

As I had mentioned in my replies there seems to be quite a bit of water that had collected on the other side of the liner leading me to believe that the tubs were overhydrated.
Note that some of that water is from condensation that had dripped down the walls and some of it was from when the tub accidentally fell.

Either way as you can see there hasn't been much change in its condition over the past 5 days.

I did an experiment by nuking the tub with a 3% peroxide misting to see what would happen:

Even if it wasn't cobweb mold it acted the way I have read other people describing cobweb mold acts when exposed to peroxide. As you can see it sort of "melted" after the peroxide was applied.

For even more reference here is the second tub:

The 'veil' of contamination over the 2nd tub wasn't as prevalent as it was on the first tub and this tub looks like potentially more traditional looking cobweb mold?

However the 2nd tub did have a distinct contamination beginning to grow in it that I don't recognize:

Hopefully someone knows what this is? I removed it before burying because it looked gnarly.

It might also be important to mention that I noticed a fungal gnat infestation beginning in the 2nd tub for sure and potentially the 1st tub as well.

Leading me to believe that there may have been larva in the manure I used for the substrate that somehow survived pasteurization. I say this because I had done a smaller substrate test about 3 weeks earlier that ended up with a fungal gnat infestation.

This go around my solution was to just call the tubs a loss and "Jurassic Park" them both so hopefully it won't be a total loss.

R.I.P:

Anyways if anyone has any experience seeing contamination of this variety I would love to know what it is and how to avoid it in the future?

Thanks for everyone's patience and input! It is much appreciated!

Well... I cant say what, but something weird going on there.
I'm not sure if that's a contam as far as the whispy grey stuff specifically, I get that on my tubs sometimes but not nearly that intensely. Theres definitely something else going on there. Probably bacteria and mold.
Looks super dry too, why's it so cracked and beat up? You didnt smack it around a little just cuz she wasn't fruiting did ya?
But yea sorry for your loss mate. I think that's a tosser

No cobweb. Can you get a better pic? One looking straight down with better lighting would help with identification.

:whathesaid:
I wonder what’s with the cracks? Is the sub dry? Did the tub get dropped?

Thanks for everyone's input I really appreciate it!

Pretty devastated that it's looking like these tubs are probably a write off...

To address everyone's concerns about the cracks, I was going to mention it in the original post but thought it might be off topic.

What happened is that right before I took the picture I had the tub balancing on a chair...Obviously not well enough and it fell. Won't make that mistake again. :smbfacepalm:

Anyways it was probably less than a foot off the ground and the structural integrity of the tub wasn't compromised at all, but it did create rifts in the substrate.

As far as the condition of the substrate I think it's actually highly unlikely that it is too dry. My assessment is that if anything it's too humid.

For context I pasteurized the sub using an oven bag and created it with a water saturation a bit above field capacity to try and account for evaporation from the bag, but it held the moisture surprisingly better than I had expected.

And when the tub fell it tipped to one side and now I actually have a fair amount of water underneath my liner. Which I am going to have to deal with somehow because I don't want it to sit too long and stagnate. So it really seems over hydrated if anything. (I'll update  with pics tomorrow and I'll try to take one with better lighting @WeavieWonder, the translucency of the tub plastic does mute the colours a bit)

In light of the responses my question to the group is:

If these are potentially a write off anyways do you think that it is worth me attempting to remedy this with peroxide?
(I figure even if it does nothing I'll at the very least know that it won't help and it sounds like at the current moment these tubs can't get more F'ed than they already seem to be).

Ashtray161 in response to you mentioning that it may potentially be due to some form of bacteria, I have started to have a sneaking suspicion that the WBS jars that I used as spawn may have had something wrong with them.

I'm probably going to make a separate post about it but for some reason the WBS is incredibly difficult to break up. Which I initially thought was normal as all of my jars were like that and this is my first time dealing with grains. However I have since learned that this is a good sign that something is amiss.

Note that they all passed visual and smell tests for contams but it's by no means a fool proof verification.

Also it's quite possible that they have unintentionally been over-incubated (The jars are grouped together inside of an enclosure and I believe that the proximity of the jars might have created an unintended insulating effect). Which I have read is a possible reason that grains may be harder to break apart.

That being said my gut is telling me they still shouldn't have been as hard to break apart as they were.

So that leaves me to expect that the LC used to inoculate them is the compromised portion of the production chain. Literally just got all of my agar supplies tonight though and I'm incredibly excited! So I should be able to test the liquid culture to verify my suspicions for certain by the end of next week.

Let me know what you think of my reasoning in light of the this information.

Thanks a ton for chiming in!

Thanks Nichrome. As much as it is a set back, I'm definitely going to do an entirely new run regardless of how the situation plays out with these tubs. I think I'll drastically increase my odds for success beginning from the ground up using agar.

You are on the right track thinking that. My recommendation is go for traditional agar methods with petri dishes and parafilm. Lots of things work for lots of people but standard dishes poured hot and wrapped with parafilm is a bulletproof method without all the "dialing in" required for no-pour or alternative vessel type methods. (noting wrong with no pour or deli cups if that's what works for you )
