cobweb mold

Just curious about cobweb mold.
I cased with 15cups verm/15cups peat/2cups limestone mixture, pressure cooked for 45 mins.
i MAY be experiencing some cobweb mold on the casings.
should i use more lime? or how would i combat this problem?

does cobweb mold respond to h2o2? (hydrogren peroxide?) or does it repel like the mycelium does?

If you have cobweb mold, there's a very minimal chance that you'll be able to combat it sucessfully. If it is merely growing on the top of the casing and has not started sporulating yet, you may have a chance. If it is from underneath in the substrate, you basically should throw it out and clean the area out.

thanks for the reply. when you say if its only growingon the top, i may have a chance.. do you mean it may have a chance of pinning still?
it was allowed to colonize the case to 25% for about 3-4days, then uncovered, and put in the terrarium.

I have a feeling that its a problem with teh case itself, because 4 others also have the cobweb curse.
would addition of more lime to my recipe (see above) reduce chances of contam.. such as this cobweb catastrophy?

I believe too much lime will reduce/slow Mycelium growth...Did you cover your casings with tin-foil? Poke holes in it?.. If not, then try that.. If so, then try to fan them more and you should be fine "next time"

Ohhhhh...
so you're saying that the casings developed this cobweb mold BEFORE i uncovered them?

What i did, was covered them in saran wrap, let the mycelium grow through the casing, then uncovered them, and put them in the fruiting chamber
when they were colonizing the case, they were in the incubation chamber (28degrees celcius) and then put into the 21 degrees celcius fruiting terrarium.
i uncovered them when i put them in the fruiting chamber,
Only one of the 3 pans had slits in the cover, but it only had like three 1/2" long slits.

1 how many slits do you put in?
2 do you allow it to colonize case in incubator, or fruiting chamber
3 should i add more lime to my casing mixture? (currently 15cups verm, 15cups peat, 2cups limestone)

I was under the impression the cobweb developed AFTER i uncovered it.. but .. .
BTW, my case was sterilized for 45mins at 15psi

Are you sure it was cobweb mold? Mycelia on casing
material will look whispy and white, that's normal.

This is how I did my casing, in case you care:

1. Added hydrated perlite/dry perlite to the bottom of a
sterelite container to provide humidity.

2. Cased 3 jars on top of about 1 inch of moist vermiculite.
Laid some soil over the mycelia/substrate.

3. Covered container with saran wrap, white whispy mycelia
began covering the top of the casing. Cold shocked in the
fridge once it was covered. Uncovered container after
coldshock to allow more oxygen.

4. Left on vacation for a week - what timing. Came back to a
cracker dry casing with a few abhorts on top. Waste of
time... right?

5. Dunked casing in 9:1 Water:Hydrogen Peroxide for 5
hours. Drained baking tray by cutting holes in the bottom and
sides. Placed tray back in box, left cover off. About a week
later, well... last I counted, I had about 50 guys coming out of
this casing.

Moral of the story is... I don't know, but this is a lot of fun. :smile:
