Re: Rye Berries not collonizing

i know i probably have to much water, but there's no puddeling. the only wet spots are where the condensation on top touches the rye. The bottom acualy looks dryer than the top so i just fliped them all over. Now the filter patch is on top so i might be able to evaporate some of the water off. This is my first time growing with rye. First time with compost too. Im going to use the rye to spawn the compost. as far as bacteria, there better not be any. The rye's from the Dung brothers so it should be very steril. I was very clean when innoculating. I dont see any fermentation that i call tell anyway.
PS. almost forgot. i would say the temp is around 80F no more than 85F

Keep the temp at max 80. 75 would be great.

I was way off with my temp estamation. for some reason the bags got hoter than my jars ever did using the same pad. thay have been siting in there for a week at 95.5F I tirned it off and now thay ara at like 72, i'm gana play with my pad and get it around 80. will the spores still germonate at being at 95.5 for a week? Someone please say there's a chance. i've been looking forward to working with rye for a while and dont want to have fucked up already.

They should be alright!!!!! Why are you inoculating a bag of rye? You would be better off inoculating jars of grain. Less volume to colonize. This would speed up the process. In case of contamination, you are gonna be out a whole bag of grain spawn. It is usually best to compartmentalize your process. Use quart jars or even 1/2 pint jars as your first jars. These, after being assesed for contaminants, can be used to inoculate the compost. Even better would be to pick the healthiest looking jars and inoculate more grain with these. Then use those as spawn for your bulk substrate. Grain can be difficult to get the right moisture content when using such large amounts. If your spores do germinate, it will take a long time to run through such a large amount of grain. Bags of grain, and large jars, are usually inoculated with grain that has already been colonized, or with liquid culture. It just takes to long a time, the way you are doing it. It is possible for sure, but risky.
