Re: PF Strain - Problem fruiting! [Re: Kast]

First of all thanks for the advice!
- The cakes are definitively not contaminated. I thought
about this and cut one open and inspected the others and
they are perfectly healthy as far as I can see.

-concerning your question: yes, it was a multi-spore inoculation and the spore-syringe was purchased directly from PF.

- humidity: I lowered the humidity slightly but as Kast suggests this shouldn't be the issue.

- CO2: this _could_ be the problem but if it was it isn't anymore now and we should see the results soon.

- temperature: it is perfectly in the range indicated by stamets
75-76F) for fruiting...

- question: PF says itself on it's site that "The PF race usually flushes rather poorly on the first flush, giving _MOSTLY_ abhorts"... somehwere else on the page "But also, many if not _most_ of the primordia will abort. "
Judging from this what I see doesn't sound THAT abnormal... however it seems that some of you DON'T have this problem!?

Well, as I said I've previously used the same setup without any problems so unless the PF-variety is radically different it shouldn't be a humidity problem.

That beside: there are 2-3 healthy (fully grown) mushrooms but 99% are aborts... I guess this also speaks against humidity problems.

Also: the cakes are definitively not contaminated... the only issue / difference is the strain (PF).

The PF strain will grow in the same conditions as any other strain you have grown. And in some cases, it will grow even better due to its early fruiting abilities. If you say the only difference is the strain, then I'd have to say there's something you're missing. The most likely problem is a contaminant, probably a green mold underneath where you cannot see it. I've seen this many times and it's common with all other strains as well.

If it's not a contaminant, and the source of the strain was a multi-spore inoculation then it's condition related. Humidity will not likely increase the number of aborts. If you asked me "which condition" I would have to guess either an abundance of co2 or the temperature is too high.

PF was probably aiming his statement toward the usage of PF style cakes. The strain probably acts much different on rye grain (I don't know for sure, I've never grown PFs out on rye). Well, if you think co2 might've been the problem then keep an eye and lets see what happens.

Or stop using cakes, and use boxes, they yield more than cakes!!!
But I must say, that I had this problem too with boxes. The fact that some boxes had done one flight and some boxes still had to have pins. I expierenced that this was the cause of low humidity. That's what caused (by me) the pins not to show up, After leaving a bottom water in the terrarium this problem was solved!
