Beautiful subs mate! Just out of curiosity where abouts in the hills were you searching (eg. Southern, central, northern)?

Took me four years of persistent hunting dude. Head out there as much as you can and you'll find them eventually.

Check out the guides by OOISI and bobwastaken. Study them. You'll find some eventually 🙏

Hahaha I don’t ask for much just the GPS coordinates please. Jks haha.. unless..

In all seriousness though, I’m quite a newbie but I have hunted before in Victoria and have just found it so much easier to find them. Maybe the conditions are not right yet but the general fungus growth doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as high here in SA. I will keep trying though that’s for sure

Haha nah all g mate. No harm done. I remember wishing someone would show me too!

Yep. Victoria is wetter, colder and they have a few more species. That makes a hell of a difference. We haven't had a lot of rain yet. Expect more to come in the next month.

Here are some guides I was talking about.

bobwastaken - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22172072
OOISI - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26552041#26552041

I studied these and had general success last year, finding my own spots across the hills and down south.

Persistence really pays off and the reward is so great when you find your first haul. It's all part of it mate!

Good luck!

The rain forecast is looking very good for the run up to the june long weekend which is usually a reliable time for subs to be out in numbers making it easier for new hunters to get lucky.

Nice and juicy oosie.

Still haven't been to the wetter cooler places this year.

Here's a few from my middle today.
First flush dried out before the rains but the second one has been timed perfectly for the rains ahead.

Victoria for sure has a higher diversity of species than SA. Their season also peaks earlier than ours and it has been a dry season on the whole so far in South Australia. Late June and early July in my experience seems to be the best time for finding the most widespread fruitings here most years, it will get better. Still relatively early days yet.

Theres been afew spots of mine destroyed by fires over the past 2 years. But if I'm thinking of the same spot you are from the more recent fires not all of the area got destroyed, as mentioned previously look around the area and follow some creeks that you were sure had subs near them.

Yeah I know the spots you speak of. It doesn't concern me in terms of finding subs since they grow pretty much everywhere in the hills. Just unfortunate to lose such pictureque spots. But it's all good, they'll grow back eventually.

I've heard a few people are finding what they think are honey fungus, no positive confirmation of them as yet. Fingers crossed they are what you think and we all have another edible to hunt.

Yeah I have no idea if it actually is. But i've never seen this species before and it superficially seems a possibility. Fingers crossed.

A few recent finds. Loved these twisting twins.

It can be pretty striking the similiarities in colour between subs and alutacea when they have dried out in old age. (sub on the left, both mushrooms on the right are alutacea.)

Had my first finds for the season today

Defiantly still finding them in wetter microclimates but there is plenty of pins our and hoping this rain coming will really kick things off.

was out picking today in my usual spot and I am now fairly certain I have mistaken an unknown species for subaeruginosa(couldn't find I.D thread sorry... If someone can link?) Can anyone confirm what species this is if not a phenotype, very similar feature.

Good finds friends down under! I propose us Californians come out your way for the season and vise versa. Just like our nations fire fighters but opposite season.
Anyway keep up the good search ‘mates’

Found a pretty nice patch in the central hills this weekend. It seemed to be one lonely flush in the middle of a large pine plantation as I didn't see a single other sub for hundreds of metres in any direction. Probably a couple hundred subs in a maybe 15x3m area, random as. Looking forward to this weeks rain and cold snap freshening things up.

Plenty of pins and more hydrated ones mixed in but generally they were buried in the vegetation and hard to photograph.

The amanitas are finally starting to come out in numbers too.

Gorgeous lanky sub there macky and looks like you have an alutacea mixed in there Thing, awesome.
