regardless, cost of living goes up regardless of minimum wage. the economy grows by around 2-3% a year, ideally. cost of living is naturally going to go up over time as the economy grows and the market, being a living thing, also changes. maybe in the far future it will go down if the population also shrinks, but deflation is often not a fun thing for an economy. it's... usually a very un...fun thing. considering our rate of population growth in the US, however, unless we start opening up to immigration soon, we're probably going to see deflation in some decades due to an aging population, similar to Japan. hopefully we won't be so closeminded about foreigners as they are. (who am i kidding, there's no way we'll adapt an open borders policy to save ourselves, conservatives would declare a second civil war.)
Why would immigration help the US worker? We already have depressed wages, how would more people in an already over saturated labor market help the working class? You do realize the very wealthy are the people spewing the narrative you're attempting to sell?
Do you know what helps the deflation that hurts the US worker? Higher wages and better social programs!!! Not more workers to compete with that only benefits the very wealthy.
deflation happens for different reasons, but one big cause is from a falling population. immigration would help in this case to counter a falling population. the US is barely maintaining it's own population as it is with the growth rate, and the amount of kids on average is falling year by year. this is a common issue to first world countries - people simply just have less kids in more developed countries. elevating third world countries to second then first world countries is, in fact, one of the best ways of curbing population growth. you see an initial population boom as people have a lot of kids (because in those countries, lots of kids is the norm - you expect not all kids to survive), and suddenly all those kids are surviving. but then as those kids are all surviving, the next generations have less and less kids naturally. within a few generations it tends to drop off to 2 kids on average or less, like Japan.
now, i'm not saying we should have open borders where the immigrants are illegal immagrants still, because then we simply have cheap labor that outcompetes labor already here and that defeats the purpose - although, truth be told, no one in america really wants to WORK the jobs that illegal labor usually works. it's hard as fuck work, pays little, and is smelly, dangerous, and gross stuff like processing raw animal carcasses or working all day in extreme weather picking berries. so...america's "jobs" arent exactly in a major threat here to begin with. instead, i'm saying we should improve america's immigration process so that it's possible to actually get through legally sooner than bloody 10-20 years and thousands and thousands of dollars. we're basically incentivizing illegal immigration by making the process of legal immigration impossibly difficult.
moreover, the job market does not suddenly "oversaturate" by introducing a ton of new immigrants. those people need places to stay, need to eat, need clothes, need need need. that's called demand. that's called consumers. when you have population growth, thats called, you guessed it, new markets. new markets means new opportunities, and thus, more job openings. this isn't just new jobs at existing stores either - immigrants have their own interests and wants due to their own cultural influences. people from mexico have their own tastes in food, their own brands from mexico they might miss, and that means new stores, new jobs where none existed before, and so forth. likewise with immigrants from other countries. immigration is not a negative. it's fresh new ideas from around the world, fresh new genes from other countries, and a fresh injection of art and culture to inspire your own to new heights.
I'm sorry, but bringing in a bunch of poor, unskilled and uneducated workers doesn't create economic prosperity for the US working class, it only benefits the very rich. It's been that way for the entire history of the US. Again, peasants consuming basic needs doesn't create economic prosperity for the working class. The US has seen real wages decline for the past 40-50 years, that's due to globalization, immigration and technology gains. A tighter labor market creates higher wages, it's simple supply and demand at play.
I'll tell you what, when the US worker sees 10-20 years of real wage gains, then we can start talking about increasing immigration into the US. Until that happens, I don't want to hear about it unless that immigrant has a special skillset/education.
