How to respectfully leave your job?
    #2677458 - 05/14/04 10:34 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

(*Names Changed Just For Shits And Giggles*)

Okay so currently I work for J4 Sports. This is not a desk job. I keep in contact with my manager by phone and email. I just got a SICK position with Smith Snowboards (which was ultimately my dream job) which is making me move to Vermont.

I have to tell my J4 job. The thing is - this Smith thing is a trial 3 month internship. However, even the people who hired me at Smith explained that this is just a REALLY long interview and many of the times they hire their interns. I want to tell my J4 job that I will only be away for 3 months and hope to go back to them after the internship - but see I can't promise this considering I don't know the future!

J4 also put in a LOT of training for me. I don't want that all to go to waste... ya know?

I don't know how to go about this... my manager is REALLY cool but I still feel bad. And this is actually mandatory for my college degree - we have to have a Summer internship to get our degree - so I also guess I can blame it on that too.

2 weeks notice is always best , so as not to burn bridges . But if you cant do that tell them the truth and fuckem if they get all pissed off .
You could always be a smart ass too , just say ...
"I was lookin for a job when I found this one , and the new one is better for me " Good bye !
Good Luck

i'd definetely go the "hey i need to do an internship for school so i'll be away for the summer" route... that way if it doesn't work out, you can always go back to your old job, but if it does, then you can explain to your old job that the internship turned into something more serious...

good luck!

> we have to have a Summer internship to get our degree

That is pretty common and the way I would explain it. Give them as much notice as possible and let them know that you expect to be coming back. You cannot count on an intern turning into a full time job until/unless it happens. If you do end up staying on full time, after three months, the original company wont be in such a shock from you leaving and will be able to handle the loss easier.

give 2 weeks notice.
explain the internship thing - say you'd like a job when you get back.

If there's one available when you get back, you'll probably get it - saves them the training, and they already know you're a good worker.

just be honest with him about the situation - fill him in on all the little details, let him know that you just can't pass up an opportunity like this (even if it's not 100% guaranteed) and tell him that allthough you'd certainly understand him not being able to just sit around waiting to see if you actually get the job or not, you'd like to be able to come back and work for him if it doesn't work out with this other place (if at all possible)

there's a pretty good chance he's gonna tell ya he can't guarantee he'll be able to give ya your job back...but hopefully he'll understand that you wouldn't be taking this sort of a risk in the first place if it didn't mean so much to you - cause if he can see that, then chances are he'd also be willing to help you out in *some* way if you do wind up having to crawl back to him (even if it's not the same exact job you have now)

the trick is to make sure he knows you don't really want to leave, but rather - you have to

Tell them today , no ifs ands or buts . Explain the whole scenario and ask if there is a chance to get positon back when done with internship , perhaps both jobs will work out a schedule that allows you to do both . Will be tough and all but if that is what you gotta do ... DO IT !
Good Luck

Persoanlly as a service manager myself , I would rather you do it in person , letters tend to leave out details , and does not allow for questions and solutions to the whole shebangy !

I would love to do it to her personally however my manager is in Baltimore and I am in New York. This is a regional thing and our only contact is by phone or by email. I am doing an email so it is easier for her to foward to her managers and such and see the exact details. We all know how the telephone game works... it never comes out right.

I am very comfortable with my manager - it's very informal as well.

Okay so here's the email:

Hello *First Name*,
I just recieved a call from my college's internship department. As you know I go to the Fashion Institute of Technology. I will be finishing my classes for my AAS degree in December. The only problem is that in order to get my AAS degree, it's mandatory that each student gets an internship through the FIT department. I placed my application in many many months ago because I knew eventually I would need to get an internship to get my degree. There was a very long waiting list and I ended up forgetting about it completely.

As with every college (but FIT in particular), they are not really reliable. I ended up finding out about this internship only a half hour ago. They have placed me in an out-of-state internship. I am required to work full-time for the whole summer. I am to start on June 14th but since I am moving out of state I need to find a place and settle in before that, which means I will be leaving in the very beginning of June.

I really enjoy working for J4 and I am really worried about this. I do not want to leave this job but at the same time I do not want to be a burden to J4 by not working for 3 months. If it is possible, I would love to be able to have my job when I come back. I believe that I have already formed positive relationships with my accounts. I also believe that I have learned a lot and it has helped me to improve my work in every visit. I am very sorry about this and I wish my school would have given me earlier notice. I am assuming that a few people dropped out and I just happened to be next on their list.

Please let me know what will work out best for the company. I will continue to work and do my best for J4 until the time comes when I have to leave. Thank you for your time and understanding.

Sincerely,
Susan *Last Name*

I think phi is exactly right. If you need the job when you get back it would be in their best interest to re-hire you. It would save them a shitload of money to hire someone already trained and to hire someone that they already know is reliable and a good worker. Congradulations on the whole intern thing man. It sounds very exciting.

thank you very much - ya they sent me from NY to TX for training and paid for a hotel for 2 nights. Treated me to dinners and all that nice stuff... so I really think they might keep me around. I know this is a new division that the company started so they aren't even full yet as far as having employees goes.

the internship is gonna be sick - i will be helping the development of clothes that will be coming out in 2007. that's sooooo exciting!!
