Re: Caps' SOS's (Shoebox On Steroids) [Re: badsponge]

Probably a stupid question, but how does one deal with shrooms that push the top off? I switched from using 54 quart regular tubs to this tek so I could effectively double my grow space. But I didn't think about my shrooms getting big enough to pop the top off. I only have 2 tubs now so it's not an issue to leave the top ajar. But I want to get to ~20 tubs at a time. Only way I can do that is if I stack them. Is it cool to just force the top down and let them grow in a squished space? Or should I used less coir to give them more headroom?

Ha! No I'm serious! When I have more tubs I'm going to have to stack, and unsure if the cramped space will have any adverse effect.

Itll be fine just like that til harvest... they can also be dubtubbed: just like a shoebox... these perform well without popping tops, and the mush will grow out of the way lol... as is, the canopy is playing the roll of the lid and maintaining microclimate at the surface

Started using these Boston clips, which hold well enough to stack them... I dont suggest more than 3 just bc the weight starts crushing the walls of the bottom tub and cracking lids(not dubtubbed)

Typical pinset at 2qt/brick... have bottom watered a few 48-72hrs before harvest with excellent results, and faster recovery for 2nd flushes it seems (dont hold me to that)

I suggest snapping it shut at spawn and not touching it until harvest... I rarely look at them prior to day 12 anymore... depends on how comfortable I am with the spawn too though... I've been running this peuw ragged for a few months; I've no worries with it so largely ignore them

Has anyone tried this yet?

I have one SOS tub going that I spawned 7 days ago. I tried Caps' super dry coir (1 brick coir + 2 quarts water) but it was so dry that there were chunks of coir that wouldn't hydrate no matter how much I mixed it (although I didn't mix it until 24 hours after adding boiling water). So I decided to just add water until I reached field capacity (3 quarts water total). Mixed 6 quarts of that coir with 4 myco-quarts fully colonized WBS. Then sprinkled 2 quarts of the coir on top as a psuedo-casing layer. Snapped the lid on and it's been like that for the last 7 days.

I'm getting a ton of condensation on the sides that is dripping down and pooling along the edges. You can really see it on the left edge of the tub on the second picture.

I just flipped the lid to try to get some of that to evaporate... Any advice? Thanks.

Sounds like you should have stuck with the 2 qts water. The point of using less water is that it's easier to mist a tub that's dry then it is to evaporat the water back out of one. But honestly you should be fine just don't mist it till after you get fruits and don't try to dry it out. After zooming in on your surface I'd just let her be. Hell you may even need a mist in a few days. Looks fine from my couch.

Yep, I had the same problem. I used 2.75 liters in my first few tubs, WAY too wet. Pulled back to 2 liters and it's just right.  However, I add the water, put the top on to stop evap, wait about 30 mins, then mix up the coir evenly. There are dry chunks in the middle, but I break them up and mix with the rest of the coir, let it sit another hour or so, no more dry chunks.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. Here is a pic of my tub around 12 days and 17 days after spawning.

I had to leave town for thanksgiving and came back to find these fucked up fruits. It seems like these tubs require much much drier coir than field capacity. Caps, you might want to add that in the main post.

It's in my coir prep, which is part of the series... and stated several times throughout the thread... I reccomend 2qt/brick... pretty sure the prep is linked in the OP... At least they're fruiting?

Side by side 3qt spawn and 4qt spawn:both with 1gal (2qt/brick) coir and 1gal BK mixed, and 2qt taken out prior to spawning for a top layer... the 3qt sub is outperforming the 4qt sub: that's the only difference... same height in the closet, opposite sides but equal distances to the door with a fan blowing out center... same batch of coir, same bag of black kow... it was particularly wet towards the bottom of the bag, which was used for the 3qt tub sub mix, and may play a role

Both sides of the closet:

Yeah I’m aware that that’s what you recommended but I think it’s vital to know that normal field capacity has indeed been tested with these tubs and yields very sub-optimal fruits. In other words, there’s a difference between recommended and required. I purposefully didn’t follow your recommendation because it seemed so dry, so I don’t blame you at all, just want to help others avoid doing the same.

Thanks for sharing your pics... very interesting.

And thanks again for the tek! It’s been really fun experimenting with it.

Define sub optimal.

See my pic above, fucked up fruits with no caps (which is typical of fruits grown in far too wet of an environment right?)

I disagree, I’m glad that I have ruled out the possibility of using field capacity coir in these tubs! Now I will listen though

Too much water will still give you normal looking fruits, just stunted.

Your pics make me think contamination due to the amount of aborts.. or not enough light(immature caps)

I was thinking bacteria personally: even the look of the surface culture... which is exacerbated by excess moisture... excess moisture also limits evaporation, and thus fae, rendering conditions slightly anaerobic and more favorable to the infection... all compiling for a type of snowball effect of sorts... field capacity coir can be used. But typically require that you pour off the puddles with full colonization... even slightly over hydrated and the edges fruit before the center... it's a little touchy, but once you nail water content, these are truly set and forget from spawn to 1st harvest, even pulled a few 1.5-2 oz second flushes without being rehydrated: even at only 2qt/ brick... my biggest variable at this point is the moisture content of the black kow(varies wildly)... the culture REALLY likes the BK though... colonization is a little faster, and I get more second flushes with it... not to mention that it's cheaper by volume and requires no prep

A cracked lid can help things too... just like a shoebox

Thanks both of you, could be lack of light since I forgot to turn the light on before I left... didn’t think it would matter that much since it was just a few days and they were already about half their final size when I left, but maybe I was wrong...

I'm leaning more towards infection... but light maybe, yeah... I have some cultures that cant get enough, and others that perform best with ambient room lighting... FUN PART IS FIGURING IT OUT... thanks for giving the tek a run: still positive results in my personal opinion ... like you said, you now know why it's recommended dry... I always always ALWAYS recomend playing around, but prolly best to approach a new tek as is to see the results of the intended procedure, and make intuitive adjustments based on observation... all the ratios are a result of fairly extensive testing: but in MY environment only  I'm glad you went this route and had similar results... what's the climate like typically? I d ok not need location specifics. But winter/summer, wet/dry? I find it interesting the differences in approach even from season to season in some locations

Agree with all of the above! Yeah it could always be infection as well, but that alone wouldn't result in the super small caps right?

And like I said somewhere above, I was going to follow your coir tek, but I didn't mix the coir until ~24 hours after adding 2qt boiling water, which resulted in dry chunks that I couldn't get hydrated no matter how much I mixed, at which point I got sketched out and decided to add water until I reached field capacity. I think if I mixed relatively soon after adding the boiling water (as I'm pretty sure you say to do in your coir tek lol) I wouldn't have run into the dry chunks problem and thus I would have continued with 2 qt water.

I'm in the south central US, kind of a weird climate, can be very hot and humid in the summer but right now it swings between humid and drier.

I gotcha... I dont mix until just prior to use, but it works out... I'm a serious minimalist lol... really depends on the severity of the infection I'd imagine... they don't look quite done either: no misting? Temps?

Hmm weird. Maybe you have lighter bricks than I do? Who knows.

Here were the jars that I used for this tub. No sign of contam as far as I can tell.

I agree that the fruits don't look done but they have looked like that for the past three days, so I went ahead and harvested tonight. I haven't misted at all. Temps have been 67-72 the entire time.

I have five more jars ready to spawn now, I'll give this another try with 2 L water (and 5 myco-quarts spawn instead of 4).

Jars do look sick IMO... it's not horrible, but the culture is dense, and the little bit of moisture present looks snotty... coupled with excess moisture and resulting insufficient air exchange, sounds like a full abortion... I'm playing with 3qt vs 4qt now... I use bags and so they're full quarts, measured with a gallon pitcher... surprisingly, the 3qt sub is outperforming the gal sub... not by much, but faster to pin, likely 24-36hrs ahead on harvest

Definitely valuable insight: KEEP SHARING!

I agree about those jars. The myc looks too dense, almost creamy. That's a sign of contams.
