Thanks for chiming in Bod! As much as I hate revealing this was spawn (and substrate) purchased from what I assume is a reputable vendor and my spores were purchased from another—I would love to make my own however it’s important for me to do everything as discretely as possible due to my current living situation. In the future I’d like to find a way to take care of it all myself, start to finish, but that time is not now, unfortunately.
I think what set things on the downward spiral was my spawn method—initially had the tub sealed for four days after spawning. After opening the tub, realizing I’d fucked up by sealing it, there was a strong fermentation smell but it gradually went away with FAE. I think I definitely opened the tub too many times to check for smells after flipping the lid.
Would you think the spawn itself was contaminated from the outset or more likely that I, 1) fucked it from the outset by sealing it for four days without FAE, then 2) opening the tub excessively to check for smells perhaps introducing contamination that way?

I really appreciate everyone’s input so far. I realize using purchased spawn/substrates is among the top offenses in this forum, it’s just what seems my best option at the moment.

u went wrong buyin pre made shit then putting spores to grain that almost always equals failure in one way or another try agar

I don't think keeping it sealed helped anything but it didn't cause the problem. Spores directly to grain did. And spores directly to premade grain just increased the chance of failure.

Sorry if it’s a stupid question, but what is it about spores directly to grain that causes problems? In my total inexperience, the spawn bags looked good after colonization—you say they were probably fucked even then?

**UPDATE** Looks like my mycelium pulled through and now I've got some fruits coming in. At this point I leave the lid cracked upside down when I'm at work and take the lid off when I am home--regularly misting them so that there are small, visible droplets. How does it look to you guys? Should I reduce misting or keep it up since the A/C tends to dry things out? Also, are the caps supposed to be that dark? I see a lot of pics showing lighter brown cap coloration. Any and all feedback welcome and appreciated.

maybe lil on the wet side fruit wise but the coir looks lil light in a few spots. but iv had some dark ass caps b4 too darker than that even. prolly just genetics. is it a ms grow?
