have a ? need advice out door tek
    #1788849 - 08/07/03 04:19 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

any one have an out door tek besides moes looking for others just incase. i have an idea let me know if this would work. i see in moes out door tek that he took straw and soaked it in water over night with out pasturizing it in 170 degree water or what ever the degree is . well what if i took a hudge garbage can soaked alot of straw init then took another big garbage can and drilled holes in the bottom. take the straw from sokaed garbage can and throw it in the one with holes drilled in it add about 20 crumbled cakes and put like 2-3 inches of moist verm on it, left it out side under a tree that gets shade or i guess what im trying to get to is there any way to colonize a hudge garbage can of straw but with out pasturizing the straw, to either grow out of the garbage can or dig a very very big hole and dump the colonized straw in it top it off with moist verm and then jus sprinkle it every once and a while?

mikey read the post above u i need to figure out i can colonize 2 bales of straw at once or are u saying my garbage can will work as long as its out side? if i use a black garbage bag inside the can or just a black garbage can that should heat the straw up enough to colonize right?

if you do it inside thecan, i think it will contam, if you dig a large whole, not too deep, under a shrub or in the shade, it should work just fine. if it is in the sun it might dry out, though, so you would need to wawter a lot if it doesn't rain. good luck, keep us posted please(pictures area plus!)

Maybe a dumb question, but I do not recall reading anything in the FAQ about it. I have read about people placing contaminated trays outside and letting mother nature take over; however, everything I have read states if you have a contaminated indoors you should toss it. But it does not seem that people have a problem picking shrooms outdoors from a contaminated casing that produced shrooms. Does anybody have any links or papers that discuss people getting ill from shrooms off a contaminated cake? Only reason I ask is because I have seen pics here at the shroomery that display nice shrooms growing off of very contaminated casings. Just curious.

Thanks,

Smokey

I am continuing my outdoor tek in a few different ways with edibles and magicals. A few observations first hand.

1. Green mold itself is't toxic, but when it competes in the enviroment or runs out of food then it releases toxins which cannot be eliminated. So fresh green mold itself won't kill you. That said, the same is not true of red or yellow molds which are very very bad. Don't ever consider eating shrooms from yellow or red contaminated batches.

2. Sun, earth, and ph are natural sterilizers. Molds hate sun, earth and ph. Therefore place shroom batch if in container in more sun than usual, though not full sun. A few hours a day. This will kill yeasts and molds that form near the surface. Cover substrate with some soil and don't worry about verm. The soil will keep germs from getting into the substrate and also keep the substrate humidified. Also use some lime or other alkaline solution in your watering because molds hate alkaline ph. These three things will limit contams.

3. Don't go for depth of substrate but for width. You don't want a really deep sub because shrooms cannot form down below, rather you want a wide patch that's a couple inches thick. More surface area, less pockets of nutrient material for molds to form. Also, more contact with earth, and alkalinity will create a more controllable enviroment. If contams develop in a portion you will see them and can cut them out and refill with straight earth which will prevent the area from reforming.

4. Read Una's (Mushmush) teks on Paneolus Cyanescens. There, in picture form you'll find a detailed method of making substrate with casing. Just follow this method but in patches of ground outdoors where there is half shade, half sun. Remember, having a barbeque is alot more fun when some shrooms are watching.
