Need Advice - UnBODified Monotub TEK

I am attempting BOD's Easy AF UnBODified Monotub TEK for the first time. I am doing two tubs using colonized rye with a coco/verm mix, one transferred 8 days ago and another 6 days ago. I've noticed that the mycelium is developing a yellow tinge and some of the rye grains are still visible.






Full disclosure, I am used sterilized rye bags that were about 60 days old. I inoculated three (3) pound bags of rye and had to get rid of one due to contamination during colonization. I am also paranoid that my substrate is drying out. I keep the lid on and flipped upside down, but I'm wondering if my central air may be drying it out as I have to run it all day to keep temperatures around 74f.  Any thoughts based on my attached pics?

Doesn't look too bad.

I think most people prefer applying a layer of straight substrate on top of the mix, we're calling it a pseudo-casing these days, because a real casing is non-nutritive.

If it seems dry to you, that's what spray bottles are for.  From the pics it looks slightly dry to me.

Thanks for the quick response. I will definitely go for the pseudo casing next time. Does central air tend to dry out tubs? I can't imagine what else would cause this especially if I am leaving the lids on (flipped upside down and unhinged of course).

No experience with central air myself, but AC air is  dry.

So probably, yeah.

Yes central air will dry it out a bit. Other determining factors would be room temp and how much water was in the sub when you spawned.

If I cover my lids, how will I know when I need to flip them back open to allow airflow? Am I supposed to wait until the coir is completely white and overtaken by mycelium?

Check it from time to time to see if all the coir is covered. You can also wait until the pins pop to flip the lid.

You still think occasionally misting it will be necessary? I'm assuming I'm going to want to see droplets covering the coir, correct?

If you put the cover on chances are it won't need misting.

Correct....but just relax and let it do its thing (as long as u followed the teks to a tee).
For example: Peak summer heat I spawned some unmodified tubs and some modified tubs along side each other. The a/c came on a lot. The modified tubs held perfect beads of moisture till I harvested the first flush.
The unmoded or unbododed needed misting before first flush, but produced flushes for the record books.
I'm somewhat new to this also so not sure if more evaporation caused a heavier pinset or if it was the fae from the unmoded tub or both.
Either way just follow the teks exactly and do what the tub tells you.

I’m actually giving a go at the unmodified tub also. Noticed a slight fermentation smell through the first week of colonization (messed up, no FAE for 4 day’s after spawn). Once I introduced FAE, it seemed to eventually clear out and now at day 12 it’s pretty much completely colonized. I’ve got what appears to be some myco piss in various spots, and a few spots that I’m not really sure if it’s also mycopiss (just more of a clear/water color instead of the yellow/orange) or if these are contamination. I’ve looked through the contamination threads but didn’t see any that jumped out at me as “this is definitely what I’m seeing in my tub”. I just want to make sure it is or isn’t something I need to throw my tub out over. This is my first grow attempt and I’m trying to learn as much as I can, but if someone could give their opinion on this I would really appreciate the help.
