Rule 1 is stupid, what if I’m trying to kill someone?

Rule #1 is a real rule for gun owners.

Not for living ones.....

It’s a rule for responsible gun ownership.  The sarcasm is unbecoming.

I was taught that rule as "Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy".

Sounds like you run in some pretty rough circles.

Look, if someone’s in my house that shouldn’t be, I’ll be doing a lot more then pointing a gun at the fucker. I don’t see what’s so fucking hard for you to understand about that. Perhaps you live in a faerie world where guns can all be hung up on the wall and never have to be used, but I own guns for self defense, simple as that.

I’ve gone to the range countless times...
Never had to use my guns on a person,
Hardly see the relevance.

I guess if you consider the Army a rough circle then sure.  I'm amazed at how many times someone is killed by a firearm that was supposed to unloaded which could of easily been avoided by paying attention to where the barrel was pointed, it should aways be treated like it's loaded.  On group setting I'm sure you can imagine that you don't want someone following behind you who will sweep over you with their barrel...

One of my personal rules is to always clear your weapon (magazine pulled out and chamber left open to be inspected) when you pick it for the first time, hand it over to some else even if you know it's not loaded or simply done using it.  I don't trust anyone who will hand me a firearm that's not properly cleared to be responsible enough to have it in their possession.

Obviously most of those rules don’t apply in a self defense situation.

those are the general rules of gun safety.  The fact you don’t know this means you probably should not own a firearm.

Sara, we know how to shoot people, don't be silly. You're missing the entire point of this conversation.

Another rule of gun safety is don't tell people you own guns..

You clearly missed the entry level gun safety talk along the way.

But that's what we're here for. :shotsfired:

I think it is OK to tell people you own guns, what is NOT OK is telling people you have seven or eight thousand rounds of ammunition stockpiled. :naughty:

Rule #1 is to train.

If you are a firearms owner, it is your responsibility to get proficient with your weapons and know them in and out because when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

I can not understand adults wanting to rely on police officers to come to their rescue instead of taking charge themselves.

I have grown a lot as a shooter over the years and another bit of advice for those interested in carrying a firearm I wish I had taken is don't bother with subcompact pistols.  Carrying a firearm is an inconvenience, carrying a full sized pistol is only SLIGHTLY more of an inconvenience but worth doing.  I went from a standard glock 27 to a glock 19 with a flashlight and RMR optic, it was worth the tiny weight increase.

O, and definitely put a flashlight on your gun.
