Why do serial killers do what they do? What drives them to kill random strangers? * 1
    #26145125 -

Been watching Mindhunter on Netflix. A series about a team of federal agents whose job was to attempt to decipher the minds of serial killers, to find out why they do it. The show is set back in the 70's when the label "serial killer" didn't even exist yet.

What do you think drives them to kill? Why do they have an appetite that can only be pleased (for a time) by watching another human being die at their hands? Were they born inherently evil or were they formed by society? Or both?

Here's the trailer by the way for Mindhunter season 1 (season 2 just dropped like a week ago).

I recommend.

am a little hesitant to agree that they target "random" strangers
isn't it typically a characteristic of serial killers that each individual has their own preferred type of victim?

Yes, true. Absolutely. I should probably go back reword that. But strangers, yes. They do however, for the most part, be drawn to a particular "type".

think that type is the most major component in their selection of strangers

which is to say, it is my perception that they become so obsessed with the victim "type" that they are effectively confusing strangers for being familiar parties
kind of like how a stalker thinks and acts like they know a famous person on an intimate level, despite never actually being in personal contact

the part that would then confuse me is whether they pick their type because they want to watch that type/who that person reminds them of and represents die over and over again
or if it is a systematic obsession that culminates in a sort of crime of passion when the reality of the victim becomes too apparent in not fitting the fantasy

People we traditionally think of as serial killers tend to be sociopaths who commit crimes of opportunity.

If you look at Gacy's killings, for example. There was no real planning or foresight of any kind in them. It was all just some dude was over at his house and he decided to kill the guy and did, and then he had to deal with the body afterwards, which he often spent a lot of time not doing. Others would go out at random times to random locations and choose their victims at random which again shows a lack of planning.

Along with not being able to feel empathy towards others, true sociopaths are also unable to fully link their present actions with future consequences. They kill someone just because they want to in the moment, without considering anything else.

Hurting or killing others is also pleasurable for a large section of the population. When you combine this with sociopathy it's a recipe for serial killers.

Others kill because they're angry, because they enjoy it, or because they're stupid. I mean, they're all stupid, but you get the idea.

I think there are different serial killers.  One is more ego, the terroist and the mass shooter or bomber.  All though there is a subconscious part to those as well.

Then the subconscious predator.  Usually a sexual power motivation.  By killing the object of their desire, they are attempting to kill their desire, find relief.

I think there's different reasons for the different types of killers.

The egotistical psychopaths have a genetic condition that causes them to have no empathy, yet at the same time they feel they are above others perhaps even God like. They kill others as an act of power and ego boost of control over others. The Ted bundy's.

There's the people with anger management problems of increasing severity until they snap and kill someone close in a fit of rage. Killing spouses or family members over arguments.

Then there's the people who get depressed and pushed to the edge in life until they kill someone as an act of rebellion. They have no control over anything in their life so they do the only thing they can do to be in control. They are the ones that go on shooting sprees I think. Most people who get that depressed and people pushed to the edge in life would take their own life instead of hurting others.

And there's the killers because of an ideology like extremist religions or kkk or what have you. They get so wrapped up in a mindset that they go out to kill members of the opposing group that they hate because of whatever beliefs they have. These are the worst form of evil killers because of how it spreads and inspires others.

Yeah I'm talking about more or less the lone wolf serial killers who kill as some sort of a hobby

Sociopathic mainly. However I think mostly it's about control, being the abused instead of the abused, given up on human interactions, given up on consensual sex, grandiosity, feeling of getting away with murder I'm sure makes them feel very in control. They get to play god etc However there is no one answer to this question.

Richard Chase, the "Vampire of Sacramento", is an interesting case. he didnt have a type, he just walked around sacramento trying to open doors to houses. if the door opened, he went inside. if the door was locked, he said that he did not belong inside. he used to drink animal blood becauae he thougjt his heart was shrinking and he needed blood to keep his heart healthy. im in the process of writing a concept album about him.

If I were to become so depressed that I wanted to end it all, and wanted to take some with me that I felt most deserving, I'd look to taking the persecuters of elsewise innocent and decent people caught up in their drug war.

I'd look to the gang leaders of said "war", the Honerable and Right Honerable cunts of Westminster, who sit, after quafffing copious - judging by the rowdiness of 'Prime Ministers Questions' - amounts of subsidised alcohol. Yes, we the people of Great Britain, have to abide by laws laid down from on high...by a bunch of fucking drunks!

A lot of times it's to do with trauma in their childhood.

Ian Brady was put up for adoption at 4 months old by his mother when she was unable to look after him and work at the same time, and he never knew his father. He spent a lot of his early adult years in prison and read a lot of shit about the nazis and the marquis de sade. He was pretty much a loner until he met Myra hindley who he manipulated in to his way of thinking and got her in to the nazi stuff.

I think I remember reading once that when Myra hindley was very young there was a fire in her house and to escape it a family member (mother or aunt idr) threw Myra down the stairs to another family member who dropped her on her head.

Brady and hindley raped and killed 5 children between 1963 and 1965. The stuff they did to the 5 children is fucking sickening.

Head trauma seems to be a reoccurring issue with serial killers. Fred west was involved in a motorcycle accident when he was 18 and suffered severe head injuries. Then like 2 years later he was pushed from a fire escape and suffered more head injuries. Him and his wife Rose raped and murdered 12 young women and buried ther bodies in their back garden. Rose was also sexually abused by her father when she was young.

Richard Ramirez suffered head trauma when he was 5 he was knocked unconscious by a swing and I think he was also sexually abused by a family member, possibly an uncle.

I'm not sure if Ted bundy suffered head trauma but I know he had a troubled child hood and never knew his father, I think he had an unhealthy interest in dead animals bodies as a child, digging up dead pets bodies and may have even killed animals but I'm not 100% sure.

Cool show. This topic is really interesting to me. Abnormal psychology is really a bizarre area of Psychology.

My theory is that they get a high off killing that is unlike anything else. The power of ending someones life makes them feel powerful and completely not-hopeless. Its the ultimate power trip. Some find it sexually arousing. That's my understanding. Really fucked up thinking.

For some people, its a in-the-moment thing where they will kill one person out of pure hatred for the specific person. But for serial killers, its totally OK if its strangers. I believe the difference is social connections. Serial killers typically are anti-social and don't want to be around people. One reason why they kill (cause they have no human connections). Some killers "interlace" with society and blend in, without being detective. Those are the scariest killers in my opinion because they are like social chameleons.

Mass murderers is a complex issue and could be caused by a multitude of different traumatic experiences like in childhood, burning hatred and general anti-social behaviours.

Imo...

Sexual twisted fantasies mixed with a fucked childhood.

Some grow into shit like that after years and years of life anally blasting them.

Others are born into it with a fucked off mind and horrible past.

Think of most serial killers as the perfect storm. Everything that has happened in their life leading up to raping, pillaging, and killing was the exact recipe.
