That's a difficult question, but one approach to identifying/ranking public harms is looking at death statistics. You're probably aware that heart disease kills something like 600k people a year. Probably 20 times more people than gun-related violence (I'm generalizing my numbers here). But more importantly, decreasing heart disease could likely be achieved super easily: diet modification and 20 minutes of activity per day.

I'm not trying to minimalize gun violence. I think something should be done. I'm just trying to point out the average person's response to gun violence is far more emotional/visceral than other things. We should be aware of relative harms to keep things in perspective here.

I am going to see if I can never go back to Melbourne ever again, and live an exceptional life.

I haven't really investigated it much, but I watched an h3h3 interview with Andrew Yang, a dem candidate for 2020.  I've never voted Dem, but I'd vote for him, he seems to have his shit together, and he isn't an old windbag like Bernie.

Wouldn't people who wanted them just get them illegally then? I mean idk I'm no expert on the issue but wouldn't that just create another pipeline for the cartels to get into? Cocaine is illegal but that doesn't stop literally tons of it finding its way into the US on a daily basis.

And look I don't even own a gun so it's not like I'm some big gun guy or anything. Hey I'm all for some Utopian gun free society where violent crimes don't exist but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's not going to quite work that way. Criminals don't abide by the law. They're going to do whatever it is they want to do. So it just seems to me all that would do is take away guns from the law abiding ones.

It works all over the world.

Criminals don't abide to the law. True. A good NRA talking point.  Right now criminals have super easy access to all sorts of guns.  Take the guns away and they will have a hard time finding guns.  Plus the price will be super expensive and they won't be able to buy bullets at ToysRus anymore so how are they going to use their without bullets?  Up here our criminals have guns, generally gang members. These people shoot each other.  Plus we are right next to the US and still there is barely any guns in Canada (except rifles, we have a fuck ton of rifles)

It's no utopian. it is 100% achievable.  Most countries on earth managed it decades ago.

Dude I 100% agree. It's completely out of control, and I too blame both sides. The hatred and venom that is spewed from both sides is at such a boiling point that I just don't see it reversing. It's only getting worse. I'm hoping, probably against hope, to be wrong on this. And absolutely, the days of agreeing to disagree, or having a mature, respectable debate and agreement of differences is seemingly a thing of the past. I think most moderate Republican citizens and Democratic citizens are fine, thing is, the number of far-right and far-left citizens, I would guess, has spiked dramatically. These are the types of people that probably cheer the deaths of anyone on the other side.

We need to respect other citizen's rights to have philosophical differences politically, and be able to sit down and discuss it like mature adults, respectfully, and still be able to shake hands after. But that ain't happening anymore. In fact we're so devoid of that anymore that the shit sounds like some completely fictional fantasy.
